Guest Guest Posted May 16, 2005 Posted May 16, 2005 I am interested in becoming Catholic. My husband was married for a brief time about 20 years ago. He is not, nor never was, Catholic. Our marriage is my first. I have never been Catholic. Do we have to get his first marriage annulled in order for me to become Catholic?
cappie Posted May 17, 2005 Posted May 17, 2005 If either of you were a baptised Christian in another denominiation then the marriage between two baptised Christians freely entered into is considered a sacrament by the Catholic Church, not just between Catholics. If your husband was not baptised(christened) then his first marriage is not considered sacramental by the church and therefore can be annulled due to what is called the "Privilege of the Faith" or the "Pauline Privilege". You would need to talk it out with a priest near you.
