Brother Adam Posted June 15, 2005 Posted June 15, 2005 My computer is running 47 processes right now on startup. I know that is more than double what should be running and I don't recognize most of this junk that is eating up all of my memory. How can I get rid of these processes without having to exit out of them at every startup? Thanks!
Fidei Defensor Posted June 15, 2005 Posted June 15, 2005 Start menu > programs > startup um, i think that should be where things are placed so they start with the computer. Let me know if that is it. If not, i know somewhere else you might look.
Guest Eremite Posted June 15, 2005 Posted June 15, 2005 Download "The Ultimate Troubleshooter": http://www.answersthatwork.com/TUT_pages/TUT_information.htm It gives an excellent breakdown of all running processes. It gives you 10 free uses, after which you have to buy it. If you don't want to download it, you can also just go to their list of processes, and see what exactly is running on your PC: http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm

Antivirus will typically run multiple processes. SVCHost will run mutliple processess. Firewalls, everything in the taskbar next to the clock is running, etc... If you're worried about spyware run Search & Destroy, and Ad-aware. If your PC is running slow and you defrag regularly, throw some more RAM in it, it's pretty cheap now... I just added a gig into mine for $105 (two 512's). check out: http://www.PCConnection.com http://www.DealCatcher.com http://www.eCost.com http://www.PriceWatch.com God Bless, ironmonk Edited June 15, 2005 by ironmonk
ironmonk Posted June 15, 2005 Posted June 15, 2005 I fogot to add, if you want to know what something is, open up "My Computer", hit <CTRL> + F with your C:\ drive selected. Search the entire hard drive files/folders. Where the file is at should tell you what it is, you can also google it, but be careful of misinformation. God Bless, ironmonk
Dreamweaver Posted June 15, 2005 Posted June 15, 2005 If the problem is with Adware, you might want to check out Firefox. I've noticed a lot less spyware now that I use Firefox. Plus, you gotta love tabbed browsing.

Brother Adam Posted June 15, 2005 Author Posted June 15, 2005 Okay, running 32 processes that sounds a lot better. I undid several things like "DragtoDisc" from Roxio software and "HP Printer Software Updates". Just no reason to have them running everytime. Thanks for the additional suggestions Ironmonk, I will go through all of these and see what they are. I IBM computer buddy told me not to touch the SVC host
Theologian in Training Posted June 15, 2005 Posted June 15, 2005 Could have saved time and hdd space by simply going to START -- RUN-- and typing in msconfig. There you can uncheck most of those things that come up at the startup. Glad u fixed it thougj God Bless
jezic Posted June 15, 2005 Posted June 15, 2005 actually the start-run-msconfig works well enough but it doesn't solve all of the problems because some of them are "services" in Windows XP. The best way is to go into start-administrative tools-services From there shut down stuff like wireless z config (unless you use wireless internet of course) (this stuff can take it down to about 24 i think. If you don't care how it looks get rid of themes but do find someone who can tell you what to turn off because if you turn off some stuff in there your computer won't work very well. Just a warning) This will whack some of those dumb svchost things.

philothea Posted June 15, 2005 Posted June 15, 2005 Yeah, and besides, when I start up Linux I have around 70 processes running! Of course they don't take any noticable memory or CPU time, but hey, if he's looking to avoid programs running in the background, Linux isn't going to help.

Linux is ok... it by far does not beat Win XP... the pain of loading software, the hideous "not WYSIWYG" fonts on screen, etc... XP has so much more, is pretty, user friendly, ideal for office environment, and home. Most people don't want to know all the Root stuff to do things. Linux is like a classic VW Bug... a few people love them - messing around with them are fun, but there are better things to drive.... XP is like a loaded Tahoe... now that RAM is cheap, a few extra processes are no worry. God Bless, ironmonk
philothea Posted June 16, 2005 Posted June 16, 2005 Well.. you would be describing Linux of a few years ago, but not at all today. Development proceeds swiftly. Installation is standardized. Fonts are gorgeous. I think ALL DEVELOPERS noticed the font issue at the same time. I now have uncountable zillions of fonts -- along with trivial use of the Microsoft ones. It wasn't long ago I had a dozen fonts, and they all looked crummy. Talk about overkill. Anyway, I can't personally support Microsoft for moral reasons... but that's a whole other issue! :hide:

It seems like all of the pc os companies are the type that I hate to give money too.... but, not much of my money goes to microsoft. Right now I program in VB, Classic ASP, and ASP.NET... I plan on learning C and Java. I've used Linux, and the fonts were not WYSIWYG. I haven't used the latest version, but I plan on playing with it soon and seeing what kind of improvements that they have made. God Bless, ironmonk
Dudette Posted June 16, 2005 Posted June 16, 2005 you don't need to download a program to get rid of those programs at start up go to start, click run and type in "msconfig" without the quotes and from there you should be able to get it. Doesn't take much and it's very quick.
