Fidei Defensor Posted June 15, 2005 Posted June 15, 2005 Today in Christian History 1520 - Leo X issued the papal encyclical 'Exsurge Domine,' which condemned German Reformer Martin Luther as a heretic on 41 counts and branded him an enemy of the Roman Catholic Church.
Didacus Posted July 12, 2005 Posted July 12, 2005 Just a quick question... if Luther died in a state of heresi, this means he does not obtain saving grace? Is he perpetually in purgatory or is he in hell? Does he have any chance at salvation? I could imagine if he is in purgatory he must get teased a lot, especially from his 'former' followers....
Guest Eremite Posted July 12, 2005 Posted July 12, 2005 While it is possible that Luther died in a state of grace, it's unlikely. Heresy, particularly of the magnitude he introduced, is a very grave sin.
For as touching those who were once enlightened and tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Spirit, and tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the age to come, and then fell away, it is impossible to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame. --Hebrews 6
But, God is merciful and just. You never know...

Fidei Defensor Posted July 12, 2005 Author Posted July 12, 2005 On this day in history: 1191 - The armies of the Third Crusade (1189-92), led by England's King Richard ('The Lion hearted'), captured the Syrian seaport of Acre.

sweetpea316 Posted July 12, 2005 Posted July 12, 2005 Umm...Not to be rude or anything, but can we please refrain from making fun of Luther? I might not be Lutheran the rest of my life, but it still kinda bugs me when people diss him... -_-

I actually admire some of his writings on things that pretain to ideas other than his reformation thinking. He was a pretty intelligent guy.
Smile_Jesus_loves_you Posted July 12, 2005 Posted July 12, 2005 I heard he didn't want ot hurt the church, only saw a problem that needed fixing and traied to. It was a noble thing to do.

Fare thee well....
