Thy Geekdom Come Posted July 1, 2005 Author Posted July 1, 2005
Ah yes, I am riddled with ironies!! Seriously Micah, I admire your desire to be prudent. However, keeping your mind open to the first year courses and you will make your own decision. The most prudent thing you can do is to study what you love the most. I cannot stress this enough. You do that and God's plan will fall into place.
Yes, keeping my mind open to the first year of courses is important...there's only one problem...it's my third year of college. Decisions must be made. And I am doing what I love the most...but thanks for that...I hate philosophy, so that option can go out the window. Additionally...if we're going by what I love...then the answer is simple. Option 2, then work and grad school at once (like Theoketos is doing, I believe). God will give me the strength. However, I got my answer at adoration...it is...dual major catechesis and theology, Latin minor, make my special touch Theology of the Body and Mystical Contemplative Theology, and use Augustinian philosophy wherever possible (like I'm told of Pope Benedict, I prefer Augustine to Aquinas...sorry all you Thomists out there!).
Pio Nono Posted July 1, 2005 Posted July 1, 2005 JMJ 7/1 - Thirteenth Friday I may just be unnecessarily complicating the situation, but the reason that a crisis of proper theology exists today is because of theologians who have little or no philosophical training. Augustine, Aquinas, John Paul, Benedict XVI, John of the Cross, Edith Stein...these were all philosophers first.

Colleen Posted July 1, 2005 Posted July 1, 2005
By the way, hot stuff...your sig makes me laugh because it's a simile, not a metaphor.
Micah, you should know that similes are metaphors. I'm leaning toward 2 or 5, but I also think that a philosophy background would be very helpful and desirable. You may not like his style, but remember what St. Thomas says about theology and philosophy . . . philosophy as the handmaid to theology (the queen).
photosynthesis Posted July 1, 2005 Posted July 1, 2005 do you have to have a theology/catechetics degree to be a focus missionary? I thought about doing that for 2 years and i'm a comm/media studies major
Fides_et_Ratio Posted July 1, 2005 Posted July 1, 2005 dude, job was the LAST thing I worried about.. heck, I'm still not worrying about it. I'm a philosophy major, and theology major (thus, double.. so it sounds cool). I'm thinking I'd like to be a DRE, and that would require some grad school... but I'm not even all that concerned with it. I just want to learn some philosophy & theology so when I read JPII and Pope Benedict XVI (both of whom I immediately loved!) I actually understand what they're saying "in between the lines".

And I only hate philosophy in as much as for a scrupulant, it smells of elderberries.

IcePrincessKRS Posted July 2, 2005 Posted July 2, 2005 I'm torn between 2,4, and 5, but I think Cam had some good advice for you, too. As long as you get your undergrad and are able to work getting your masters may take longer but I don't see it as a huge thing that needs to be done before getting married. Honestly, I am a huge advocate of fininishing your undergrad and getting your BA/BS before marriage, and I did that, even though my husband didn't. In some ways I wish he had, but seeing him work slowly through it I can say first hand that it IS do-able to be married, have kids, work, AND go to school. It may be tough but when you have a supportive wife who understands what you're doing and why its not as horrible as it may sound.

Personal experience and all that jazz. Read between the lines whatever you may.
