FightingforGod Posted July 3, 2005 Posted July 3, 2005 um, we just found a spider in a closet. ive been googling brownn recluses online, and he fits all the descriptions of a recluse, except for one thing. his back legs are banded. this is reeeaaalllly important, is the spider the real deal? or is it a look-alike. from what ive found its the real deal. please help!!!!!!!

FightingforGod Posted July 3, 2005 Author Posted July 3, 2005 i know, ive been looking at pics all over the place. this guy is the right size, has a fiddle on his back, is the right color. the only difference btwn him and the pics ive been looking at is his banded back legs. which may be a difference in species, or joint marks, or just an odd quirk of the individual spider. do u know anything about the bands?

Guest Eremite Posted July 3, 2005 Posted July 3, 2005 I found a spider in my closet as well, yesterday. He set up camp behind my hamper, so I couldn't see him. I saw a dead bug lying on the floor last week, but didn't think he was someone's food. Then I did some snooping, and the little bugger tried to hide behind a wire. Bad move. You don't wanna get on my bad side.
philothea Posted July 3, 2005 Posted July 3, 2005 I wouldn't get too panicked. I have brown recluses all over, and they don't do any harm. I've had occasional bites, but all I get is an itchy spot that takes a while to heal. Some people must have allergic reactions.
FightingforGod Posted July 3, 2005 Author Posted July 3, 2005 we r taking away his air so that we can let him croak without disturbing his characteristics. then we r takin him to the zoo later for identification. he didnt bite anyone, and i read that they really arent as dangerous as everyone says, and i have yet to find anything about the bands on his legs....but just to be safe, were croakin him

(I always called them "violin spiders" before the hoopla about brown recluses.) They don't make webs. They hide behind things and then come out to hunt, I guess. Sometimes they sleep in little silk cocoons, in a corner, or behind a picture frame. When I see one I put a drop of water on a hard surface nearby and it'll rush over and drink. :ph34r: Maybe they understand that I like spiders.

cmotherofpirl Posted July 3, 2005 Posted July 3, 2005 I think a very thick shoe hill applied forcefully will deal with the problem. I had spider bite that took several months to heal, it was NOT pleasant.
