Theres all different kinds of novenas.....I know there's a 54 day Rosary Novena (VERY powerful). You say three sets of a 9 day novena in petition for what you are asking for; then you say another three sets of a 9 day novena in thanksgiving for having received what you asked for (whether you've received it or not.....always knowing that God has given you all you need).

Anyways...a novena is just a nine day prayer of set prayers in petition for something. There are many novena's to different saints; novena's for different feast days; novena's for certain petitions etc. Basically it's just a set form of prayer, that you pray for 9 days asking for something. Or in thanksgiving for something.
