I was wondering what you all do when you start lusting. Especially if there's something that's causing you to lust that you can't get away from. How do you get your mind off of such thoughts?

(BTW, the thornbush thing is a reference to St. Benedict, who was said to throw himself into a thornbush whenever he had impure thoughts).

Actually St. Francis is the Thornbush guy . . . Benedict was in a cave for a lot of years . . . thorn bushes don't grow in caves!

hyper's suggestion is a good one also picture Christ on the Cross, it's very hard to be lustful in front of the savior who died because people are lustful. Also ask st. Joseph for intercession

honestly, i know it's not religious, but think of an elephant trying to po-go stick...

the complexity of that really takes the mind away from anything else...

Think of Ernest Borgnine

I was at a Christopher West seminar this weekend. He provided two amesome ways to deal with this:

1. Imagine that the woman is ovulating. I'm serious. This will make your mind change gears right away. It highlights the incredible dignity and power present in a woman, and how God could @ any moment work through them to create new life. Plus it helps you think of the results that the expression of that lust could have.

2. Pray. Ask God to untwist your fallen sexuality. Ask Christ to REDEEM you sexually and that you could love perfectly and see that women as Adam first saw Eve.

While you pray this hold your arms out cruciform. It works incredibly. You are reminded of Christ's sacrifice on the cross. It also serves another, more practical purpose.

thinking of our blessed mother (and saying hail marys as hyper suggested) helps to value other women (men too, as they hold the same human dignity) a lot. holding them to the same level of dignity and respect as the virgin makes it a lot more difficult to commit adultery with your mind.

Few things (apart from thinking of God or Mary of course :) )...

1) Switching on the TV.

2) Play some type of computer game.

3) Listen to Catholic Hip-Hop or Christian rock.

OK, I hope I don't sound like I am isolated from mankind, but who is Ernest Borgnine?

Ya, you do sound like you are isolated from mankind, Arsonist. :D

These are all great ideas.

And I do "get" this one, and it is good advice.

Prayer always helps... always pray first, and never underestimate. Second is ESPN… or a good B-Movie (with no nudity) like “Tombs Of The Blind Dead” or “Cremators”… it’s always a good time.

Thanx for the advice ya'll.

Oh, and BTW, Benedict was the thornbush guy. I went to a Benedictine Monastery last weekend for a vocations retreat and they gave all the guys a holy card with an icon of Benedict on it and he's holding a thornbush and the monk was like "He's holding a thornbush because he was said to have thrown himself into one whenever he had impure thoughts." St. Francis is said to have always looked at the ground in the presence of a woman so he wouldn't look at her lustfully.
