ofpheritup Posted July 11, 2005 Posted July 11, 2005 Often times in my life I have promised people I would pray for them AND THEN FORGOT. Has that ever happened to you? I found (for myself) a solution. I call it a "prayer pot." I went to a Dollar store and found a cute litle vase or pot. Call it what you want. No big deal just a little something for my altar at home. Now when people ask me to pray for them I write their name on a small piece of paper and put it in the pot. So now when I look at my altar it is automatic that I think of everyone in there and I pray for them. I have found that it is easier to just write the name of the person versus writing down the specific prayer request as they can be lengthy.
cmotherofpirl Posted July 11, 2005 Posted July 11, 2005 I never thought of that one -good idea!! I record births and deaths in my office book so I remember to pray for people on their anniversaries.
ofpheritup Posted July 11, 2005 Author Posted July 11, 2005 I have an small altar on top of my chest of drawers in my bedroom. On the wall is a picture of a monstrance. On the chest itself is a small vase of flowers, a candle, a picture of Jesus, a figurine of Jesus in the manger. I also have a small plastic Pieta and last and certainly not least I have a paperweight that has a little globe inside. And of course my prayer pot. My bed is directly across from the altar. It is convenient for me to just sit on my bed during my prayer times. And just generally during times when I am stressed. When I pray I think about how my prayers travel to everyone. The globe helps me to imagine it better. It also makes me aware that everyone in the world are "my brothers and sisters." And that I have an obligation to pray for them.
mariology21 Posted July 11, 2005 Posted July 11, 2005 This is a really good idea!!! Many times I have told people I'd pray for them, and then have forgotten....not intentionally but it just happens. Or else I pray but then tend to "forget" as the days go by. I think this is such an awesome way to remember!!! I'm going to have to "adopt" it! ~Jen

Kilroy the Ninja Posted October 30, 2005 Posted October 30, 2005 Moving to Open Mic. Good Idea though!
Extra ecclesiam nulla salus Posted October 31, 2005 Posted October 31, 2005 most pre-concilar catholics had home altars in other countries. but it has fallen out of style. kensmen has an article about it.
Dreamweaver Posted October 31, 2005 Posted October 31, 2005 I've always been interested in setting up a small shrine or altar at home. I do have a corkboard with tons of holy cards and my rosary collection hanging from push pins. I even have a tiny St. Michael pewter statue on top of it! The prayer pot is an awesome idea! You could even have 2: one for specific requests, and another one for general prayers (the poor, the elderly, the dying, priests and seminarians, etc). I'm all of a sudden reminded of a little rosary case I made from a ring jewelry case that I decorated and put a miraculous medal on. My rosary has gotten very tangled up with stuff in my purse, and I can keep it in the box to keep it safe. (i think of the case as a mini shrine or sorts). Has anyone heard of little "pocket shrines"? People take altoid tins and other similar containers, decorate, paint and add pictures or other items in them. They can commemorate anything from friendship to pop culture, to religious stuff. If I had more free time and less problems with cutting up holy cards, I'd have a gazillion made by now!

I can just see some of your coworkers overhearing you talk about 'altars' and 'shrines'.....and they start scanning the papers to see if there's a rash of stray cat killings. heh

ofpheritup Posted November 2, 2005 Author Posted November 2, 2005 FINE, now that we have gotten that out of our systems. COULD WE PLEASE GET BACK ON TOPIC?
morostheos Posted November 2, 2005 Posted November 2, 2005 that is such a good idea! I should make a little altar in my room somewhere, it would be nice to have something to focus on while praying. (and put the prayer pot on it of course!)
Fidei Defensor Posted November 2, 2005 Posted November 2, 2005 heh, my altar is the entire top of my dresser. Its pretty big. I have alot of holy cards, some table top crosses, a bible, flowers, candles.. etc. Then on the wall, I have a painting of Jesus with a candle below and a crucifix above. Next to and above my dresser are two shelves full of holy cards and statues and a crucifix at the top. Then, in the corner, I have my JPII corner, with a huge framed picture, a rosary, a shelf below the picture with a candle and 2 prayer cards with his picture.
