Philo Koinonia Posted July 14, 2005 Posted July 14, 2005 Hey, Why are priests allowed to get married in the Eastern-Rite Church, is that not like marrying two different women? Philo Koinonia
Laudate_Dominum Posted August 7, 2005 Posted August 7, 2005 The priesthood that Christ instituted is rich enough to accommodate both states of life. Celibacy, associated with the Sacrament of Holy Orders is a disciple, not an essential aspect of the Sacrament in it's essence. Whereas, fidelity to one's spouse in the Sacrament of Marriage is more than a discipline, but is of the essence of Marriage. Therefore the comparison is not strictly corollary, but is in some ways analogous. But I suppose in some way it is like marrying two women, Paul does seem to indicate that this state can be describes as having a divided heart. I can even recall reading things to this effect in writings from the East. But I don't think it would be very polite to discuss in this way. For many people this is their calling and it has a beauty of its own, and its own unique strengths. I think the married priesthood in the East is brilliant! But I don't agree with importing it into the Latin Church.
