Honour Posted July 14, 2005 Posted July 14, 2005 Ok, so I don't hijack photosynthesis' thread on rosaries...... b/c it got me thinking about all the prayers I've missed out on as a one who didn't believe in "vain repetition" Anyone suggest good books for all those treasures....

Thomas DuBay has a book called "Fire Within" that's good. Are you looking for a book OF prayers, or a book ABOUT prayers?

photosynthesis Posted July 15, 2005 Posted July 15, 2005 the Liturgy of the Hours is a beautiful way to pray. The Daughters of St. Paul sell a shorter version, called "Christian Prayer". It includes morning prayer, afternoon prayer, evening prayer and night prayer and is significantly cheaper and easier to use.

I'll look for "Chirstian Prayer" BTW on the subject of books, What exactly is a Missal? I mean, I think I know it helps you follow along in mass, but does it have all the prayers, and readings, and do you have to buy like a calendar for each year or every three or well....I'm confused.

I never get enought time to really figure out the layout and where the prayers are and how to find the readings, I'm torn between being distracted by trying to find stuff and not seeing what I'm reading (I am Baptist, ya know...I think we invented the phrase..."Turn with me in your Bibles to...")

It lays out everything for you, nice and ordered (which I like) so you can be aware of the readings beforehand (and also afterwards if you hear something good--sheds a lot of light on Romans 10:17!) and a lot of them contain the parts of the Mass so you can either follow along while you're still getting used to the responses, or check it out and study it outside of Mass while reflecting on it. I take that back, it's a GREAT idea for all Catholics.
photosynthesis Posted July 15, 2005 Posted July 15, 2005 Usually if you know what sunday it is (last sunday was the 15th sunday in ordinary time), you can find the Mass readings in the Hymnal...depending on what Hymnal you use. A lot of churches use the red Worship hymnal, published by G.I.A. They have a lot of prayers in the back of the hymnal, plus all of the Bible readings for each Sunday, feast day, and holy day of obligation in the liturgical year (cycles a, b, and c). At Mass on my college campus we use the Catholic Community Hymnal, which is also published by GIA and features the same cool stuff in the back. I think it's cheaper though.

It's a very user friendly format and very helpful with praying the prayers of the Church in a VERY condensed form of LOH (I think maybe that's how it began.) I highly recommend it! ~Jen
