philothea Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 Sound. I like lots of songs in languages I don't understand. In fact, sometimes I prefer it that way. (I listen to J-Pop while working.)
melporcristo Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 The lyrics -- I like lyrics that make sense and have a good flow. But then again bands like Mae where the lyrics are pretty basic but the sound is amazing gives it a good flow.
SRMartin15 Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 (edited) I dont really know how to answer this question. Without good lyrics the song is pointless. Also on the otherside without good sound then the listener is lost. If anything i would have to say good sound, because i can deal with listening to a song that sounds good but the lyrcis stink. I know i cant listen to a song that sounds awful but has good lyrics though, So i ended up voting for sound Sean P.S just noticed i became a PM newbie from this post Edited July 16, 2005 by SRMartin15
White Knight Posted July 16, 2005 Author Posted July 16, 2005 (edited) I'm suprised lol Lyrics are on the top of everyone's list as far as music goes lol. I expected it to be, considering some Music may sound awsome but may have terrible meanings. but oh well. Edited July 16, 2005 by White Knight
Noel's angel Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 Lyrics. It isn't enough to have a song that sounds nice and makes your voice sound nice. Look at Simon and Garfunkel-most people would say that Art has the better voice, but he can't write, shown by his rather pathetic solo career. Paul on the other hand has amazing writing talent and has had an impressive solo career-Garfunkel is nothing without Simon:songs are nothing without lyrics regardless of how good the singer is
SRMartin15 Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 Good point Noel. I think in order for Music to be wide spread it must have both good lyrics and sound
Noel's angel Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 hee hee u called me Noel why do people always do that??? yeah, there's no point in having great lyrics and a terrible sound. But I think that generally I'd rather have a good songwriter with an average voice than a great singer with terrible songwriting abilities. Or, as simon and garfunkel did, combine a great singer/songwriter with another amazing singer and have the perfect combination
Socrates Posted July 17, 2005 Posted July 17, 2005 Sound all the way! Music is by definition all about sound, and most people don't even pay that much attention to the lyrics. You can have words without music (prose or poetry), and music without lyrics, but you cannot have music without sound! Of course, great lyrics make a song better, and bad lyrics can be problematic, but they are secondary to the music itself (musically speaking).
Laudate_Dominum Posted July 17, 2005 Posted July 17, 2005 I picked sound because I think of of plenty of songs I like that sound good but have either no lyrics at all, or just mediocre lyrics; whereas I cannot think of any songs I like for the words that sound stupid. Cheers.

Lounge Daddy Posted July 17, 2005 Posted July 17, 2005 sound first then lyrical content a close second Many people will listen to a Christian artist (note: an artist who happens to be Christian) than a well-meaning Christian trying to be an artist. My point being – God bless you if you are a Christian and you are called to be an artist – whether you are blessed with musical talent, dance, literary skills, or whatever – true artists are honest with their arts Real artists expose themselves through their music. This is the nature of art – and it not always easy, just ask ManChild of Mars Ill I believe that God, the Creator - gives the gift of creativity and he asks for a proper return. And while not all artists respond in this way… um, I’ll stop before I go way off topic, lol… I love an honest artist because that is the nature of art – and honesty is also a part of living in Christianity (so I really love all the Phatmass artists) What I don’t like is a dishonest artist – I have heard albums by Christians who seem to first say “wow – the kids are really liking this artist, so I think I will try to sound exactly like them” and then they hire a band and record an album. This is an insult artistically and creatively, and really ends up backfiring on the Christian music community. It makes me cringe. I believe in skills first This is why I voted musical content before lyrical content
Paladin D Posted July 17, 2005 Posted July 17, 2005 Sound, because I listen to soundtracks and love jazz.

DemonSlayer Posted July 17, 2005 Posted July 17, 2005 Depends, especially with metal, if they're anti-Catholic/Christian, I probably won't listen to them.
