Birth Control Patch Claims 23 Lives +
Federal drug safety reports obtained by The Associated Press under a Freedom of Information Act request, "indicate that in 2004 — when 800,000 women were on the patch — the risk of dying or suffering a survivable blood clot while using the device was about three times higher than while using birth control pills."

AP points out that the majority of the women were young and in otherwise good health and at low risk for blood clots — "women like Zakiya Kennedy, an 18-year-old Manhattan fashion student who collapsed and died in a New York subway station last April," the AP relates. "Or Sasha Webber, a 25-year-old mother of two from Baychester, N.Y., who died of a heart attack after six weeks on the patch last March."

Some doctors who reviewed the Food and Drug Administration reports "were alarmed," according to the report. "I was shocked," said Dr. Alan DeCherney, editor-in-chief of Fertility and Sterility and a UCLA professor of obstetrics and gynecology."
Agreed; yikes. But, will this article make it onto CNN or major newspapers? I wish all women knew all the dangers of such unnatural things as BCP and the patch.

Wow... This should definatly be released to the masses. I doubt if people knew it could KILL you then they might go another route.

Very sad when I read about this. The scary thing is, it's treated as if no big deal.

Actually, my local news ran a story about it. So that was pretty good news that the media is slowly picking it up.

It's interesting that the media makes such a big deal about shark attacks when the patch kills almost ten times as many per year and it is so much more underreported. I think most of us at least have the thought of sharks in the back of our minds when we swim in the ocean, but most women aren't thinking about blood clots, strokes and heart attacks when they use the patch. I hate those patch commericals, I always change the channel when one comes on.

another reason for me to hate the patch. As a woman, i am shocked that feminists would say this is women's rights. i can't believe that women's rights include being used, dying, getting sick, and not being able to have children. that's really sad that one of these women was a mother. Can't these companise just stop focusing on money and understand that b/c of them, two children had to lose their mother? that's just horrible
