YAY for Bush! He lived up to his campaign promises. :D

NOW, Bush has done good, and we have our pro-life nominee, but let's not leave the poor man hanging! If he does make it to the Supreme Court, life will be hellishly difficult for him. Let's rally around him with fasting and prayers, pham

HURRAH! :)

Prayers that he will make it, and that horrible law is overturned.

From the New York Times:
Judge Roberts and his wife, Jane Marie Sullivan, also a lawyer, live in Chevy Chase, Md., and have two children, Jack, 4, and Josephine, 5. Friends described the couple as devout Catholics.
From National Review's The Corner:
Life In the Family
[Kathryn Jean Lopez  07/19 08:16 PM]

Since the Washington Post wrote about Bush's women and abortion today, how about Judge Roberts's? John Roberts's wife, Jane, has served as executive vice president of Feminists for Life (one of my favorite groups).
From the Chicago Tribune:
Shannen Coffin, a Washington lawyer who has worked with and argued against Roberts, said he was also willing to take on cases that didn't necessarily mold with his personal political views. He described Roberts as a "traditional Catholic" who does not talk about his religion.

"He's a guy who'll show up for mass on Sunday and that's sort of his own business," said Coffin, who attends the same church.
From Fidelis news release:
"Judge Robert's confirmation hearings are ripe for anti- religious bigotry," said Fidelis President Joseph Cella. "Judge Roberts is a faithful Catholic, who is devoted to his wife and children.
From Fr. Frank Pavone, President of Priests for Life:
Just a few minutes ago, President Bush nominated Judge John Roberts to replace Justice Sandra Day O'Connor on the Supreme Court. Judge Roberts is highly qualified and has proven legal abilities.
From the Knights of Columbus:
Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson, head of the 1.7 million member Knights of Columbus, this evening called Judge John Roberts "a first rate choice for the United States Supreme Court." President Bush announced that he would nominate Roberts in a nationally-televised address earlier tonight.

"Judge Roberts is exactly the kind of nominee that members of both parties have described as the kind of choice the President should make," Anderson said. "He is one of the brightest legal minds in America, graduating at the top of his class at Harvard Law School, and has a well-deserved reputation for fairness, integrity and superb judicial temperament on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit."
and how about the other side?

NARAL:

NARAL Pro-Choice America: Judge John Roberts an Unsuitable Choice for Supreme Court Justice

Washington, DC – NARAL Pro-Choice America, the nation’s leading advocate for personal privacy and a woman’s right to choose, has announced that it will oppose Judge John Roberts, President Bush’s nominee for Supreme Court Justice, John Roberts, is a divisive nominee with a record of seeking to impose a political agenda on the courts, rather than a unifier Americans could trust to preserve our personal freedoms like the right to privacy and a woman's right to choose.

Planned Parenthood:

"The nomination of John G. Roberts raises serious questions and grave concerns for women's health and safety. It is particularly troubling that Roberts went on the record calling for Roe v. Wade to be overturned when he served as a lawyer for the government," said Karen Pearl, interim president of PPFA. "Only a nominee committed to protecting women's health and safety should be confirmed by the Senate. A lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court requires a confirmation process that is thoughtful, intelligent, and fully deliberated — the Senate owes the American public nothing less."

Did you guys miss this part of the original article posted above? He is not pro-life. His confirmation could be a serious setback for the pro-life movement.
"Roe vs. Wade is the settled law of the land," he said. "It's a little more than settled. It was reaffirmed in the face of a challenge that it should be overruled in the Casey decision. Accordingly, it's the settled law of the land. There's nothing in my personal views that would prevent me from fully and faithfully applying that precedent, as well as Casey."
That was when he was being appointed to a lower curcuit court, the DC Court of Appeals. Legally speaking he is correct in a lower court to defer to the precedents set by the Supreme Court as the settled law of the land. If the Supreme Court has even overruled a challenge to it, a lower curcuit judge should apply the decision as settled law.

HOWEVER, when on the Supreme Court, he is in the position where if it came up for question again, it is his job to decide whether it should remain as a precedent.

That just shows that he understands the legal system pretty well and will only do his job as a judge, not be a judicial activist on either side.

For some reason he still strikes me as odd... Just have to wait and see...
