Fides_et_Ratio Posted July 21, 2005 Posted July 21, 2005 Very random. But... My good friend and I have started biking the 12 mile trail every couple days or so. It's not too bad (and 12 miles isn't that long on a bike... it's really 6 to the end, and 6 back), and I usually pray a Rosary with few, if any, interruptions. My problem? I get so ANGRY! lol. It's just really bizarre... I'll be praying my rosary and biking at a steady pace and it's just like "Hail Mary... GEEZ, can that guy possibly go any SLOWER?!?!.. full of grace... what a JERK!.. the Lord is with thee... man, I'M acting like a jerk... Blessed art thou among women... do these people even know how to go in a straight line!?... and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus..." etc. on and on... and when I'm not praying the Rosary, it's all the same. ANYTHING and EVERYTHING just makes me really mad while we're.. nothing goes right. So as I was trying to keep my mind on more charitable thoughts I was trying to figure out why the heck I get so angry biking all the time... at first I was thinking it might be because my friend always has to be "ahead of me" and turn it into a race (and then gets mad that I don't race back.. but I have a bum knee) and also that my idea to go biking (and inviting her along to be nice) was so that I would get in better shape/tone my legs. Her sole purpose for going? "I need to look better so someone will date me". I do think part of the problem is my biking with her... I biked with my YM friend and it was great (I probably could've gone again.. lol). So I'm thinking I should either try going alone, or going with someone else instead of her (but then she'll be mad and won't go because she doesn't like doing things by herself...) But... I thought exercising was supposed to give you endorphins and make you happy? ..it's not working for me.
Luthien Posted July 21, 2005 Posted July 21, 2005 It does give you endorphines. I go running and I feel great! I don't run to look better, thats just a by-product. I run to feel better, to breath easier, to be able to play without being winded. I dunno..lol

It takes at least six weeks before your body rewards you with endorphins for exercise. (Up to six months, depending on age, gender, and fitness level.) That's part of why people have trouble sticking with it. You sound like you need better company... but the irritation may wear off, eventually.
Dreamweaver Posted July 21, 2005 Posted July 21, 2005 Chocolate has chemicals that make you feel better. And a lot easier than exercising. I'd probably get stressed multitasking the rosary with other activities. I feel that I should meditate solely upon the mysteries and not be distracted by driving or what not. Maybe I shouldn't give exercise advice, as I help myself to a bite of chocolate.

cmotherofpirl Posted July 21, 2005 Posted July 21, 2005 (edited) Congratulations on your efforts. Try doing it mindlessly, just bike. No rosary, no deep thoughts, just be in the moment and relax. Give the endorphorins some room in your brain, your crowding them out Edited July 21, 2005 by cmotherofpirl

Fides_et_Ratio Posted July 21, 2005 Author Posted July 21, 2005 lol, only... my goal in exercising wasn't the chocolate.. it was the getting out of the house, keeping my muscles toned, staying in shape sort of thing. Chocolate wouldn't help any of that (and would in fact hide all my muscles!!) chocolate is GOOD though... proof that there is a God. anyway, the happy brain chemicals were just supposed to be the "bonus" to biking and I was just curious why I seemed to be experiencing the opposite affect! lol.

"Pray without ceasing"
Carnanc Posted July 21, 2005 Posted July 21, 2005 I feel great when ever I exercise. In just 10 minutes I feel a ton of endorphins it seems. I agree I to have tried to pray the Rosary while exercising at the gym, and find it very difficult to concentrate. I think its just that when meditating we are usually relaxed, so its more difficult when doing a strenuous activity.
zabbazooey Posted July 21, 2005 Posted July 21, 2005 When I exercise, I just think in the moment and how I'm going to do the next set of exercises, and whatnot. I feel great afterwards! When engaging in a vigorous activity like bicycling it's best not to really have any 'deep thought' or prayer, like what cmotherofpirl said. :-) Happy trails!

Personally, I am not very good at rosaries, and do best when occupied with another activity, too. Having to concentrate means I actually concentrate instead of zoning out or falling asleep. But everyone's different.
