My wife and I are looking for a medium sized dog and will good with our children of 3yr and 1yr of age. I actually was looking at getting a Brittany Spaniel and was wondering if any might own one or know of anyone who has one?

Also, does anyone recommend getting a mixed dog like a pug/beagle?

Any info would help!

Mixed breeds rock ,although mine isnt a medium sized dog ,hes great with kids and doesnt bite or anything unless the child is really aggrovating him, like pinching him and stuff ,it happened once .

Hes a Polish Tatra (we think) /Golden Retriever /Lab/ German Shepard. Mixed Breeds are great ,I suggest one.

I tend to avoid small dogs with kids.
St Bernard anyone?

Really. My daughter is not rough but my son is. He has no fear! He thinks it's funny. I recently started walking kicking up a storm...he kicked my mother-in-laws dog right in the kisser. He's just a little tank!! I'm afraid a dog might bite because of that.

Ya ,it might ,my dog snarled at a six year old girl because she was grabbing his tail excessively . Not a good thing when kids get rough ,I suggest getting the dog while telling the kid not to do that stuff.

Poodle
Border Collie

These breeds were nominated because they are the top 2 on the intelligence list. Also because they are loving, hard working, and good with kids.

Shetland Sheepdog
Collie
Schnauzer
Papillion
Golden Retriever

These were nominated for their great personalities. They will do just about anything you ask, if they understand it of course. People sometimes say no one has ever been bitten by these dogs.

German Shepherd
Labrador

These dogs were nominated for their wonderful ability to work and their will to please people. They make great companions or service dogs.

I got that info from http://www.expage.com/toptendogbreeds.

Hope you have fun searching for a dog , ;)

I've had quite a few dogs.

Shelties are very good with kids but they are also very hyper and require a lot of room to run around. They can also be very loud lol

The same goes for a Collie or Border Collie.

You definitely want to stay away from thin frame dogs since kids can sometimes be a little rough.

Any Spaniel breeds are very good with children

Dogs weighin around 20 lbs

American Eskimo dogs do very well with children of all ages as well. This is a smaller dog but they're built pretty stable.

Cairn Terriers are great with kids and are rather quiet dogs. They also don't shed a lot

Norfolk and Norwich Terriers are great with smaller children too

Now dogs weighing around 50

Austrailian Sheperds are great. My aunt has several and they are used to my little cousins falling on them and tugging on their ears

Here's a site that lists all the different dog breads and their characteristics and how they are with children.

I'm not sure if it's true, but I've heard that typically larger breed dogs are better with kids than smaller dogs. My family has a yellow Labrador and he is great with kids. We raised him from a puppy and he kind of grew up with my littlest brothers, hehe. There are seven kids in our family and most of them are under the age of 12. My little brothers will pull our dog's tail, climb on him, put their hands in his mouth, and poke him. They can be rough with him. He usually doesn't mind it, but if it gets too much for him he will get up and walk away from them. Occasionally he might bark about it, but he's very gentle. He's a good dog and Labs are typically good family dogs. :)

Austrailian Sheperds. Dont they require lots of room to run freely?

That's pretty much true Colleen. Especially from my own bringing up we had a huge Great Pyrenees. If a Pyrenees is brought into a family with kids, it will be very protective over the children just as it is with sheep. They're breed to guard sheep from anything and if they aren't around sheep they'll treat their owners and the kids as their sheep to protect. They're very very bright dogs too and nice a cuddly in the winter time

Some do and some don't. It depends really on the individual dog.

How large of an area will the dog have ?

A little over 7000 sqft. California doesnt have big back yards...unless you've got the chi ching!!!
