i was at the nat'l catholic family office this weekend in Anaheim, CA (complete with ad orientem liturgy! :saint: :D: ) and spent an OBSESSIVE amount of time at the seton homeschooling table considering i'm 7 months married and have no kids!

so yea, their texbooks are PHENOMENAL. WHY did we stop using the baltimore catechism? :idontknow: its so AMAZINGingly wonderful and thorough! but i was blown away by the way that faith was integrated into english (pronoun sentences about calvary), spelling (bible stories with word to learn), HANDWRITING, geography, history, math (word problems about how much betty should tithe this week if she wants to give 5/8ths of her allowance lol  ), science, health EVERYTHING. i loved loved loved and can't wait until we find good jobs that allow my husband to make enough money so that i can stay home so that we can have kids!! :D:

anyone have any experience with seton? hsmom, all knowing and all wise homeschooler, what do you think? :detective:

YEAAAAHHHHHH!!!!

Go Seton!!!!!! It totally rocks! ^_^

I love it, wouldn't switch to any other program. It's a bit intimidating but it's awesome.

We don't use Seton or any boxed curriculum actually. But I have many friends who do and love it. I love encorporating our faith in our schooling, though. ;)

As it happens, I am right in the middle of working on our new homeschool group's Little Flowers and Blue Knights group... cuz, you know, I wasn't doing enough stuff that I decided to take on LF/BK, a children's bible study, a service club and a social club at our parish... you know... in my spare time.

I love homeschooling...

ahaha. hsmom, can we be friends? how come people where i live can't be fun and homeschooly like you? :saint: not to mention, just plain nice :blowkiss:

what are little flowers/blue knights? btw, are the service/social clubs for adults or homeschoolers? cuz if they are for HS, wow, it would be so great to think of field trips and fun stuff to do all together. and for children'sbible, check out danielle's space (google it for the exact website). she has a lot of GREAT resources that i used for our VBS this year

and dudette: i didn't actually get to see any lesson plans so i'm not sure how they divide it up. oh and i saw ONE concern: their 6th grade science text had stuff about the earth being 4 million years, and pre-homosapien type stuff. i'm prety sure that my husband and i wouldn't be teaching our kids that (they'd be genesis babies :D) , do you know if seton has options for choosing different textbooks, etc for certain subjects? like finding your own? same with religion, cuz scott hahn just came out with a new scripture textbook that ROCKS and i would totally want to use it

The Lesson plans are great, I can scan some and show them to you, if you'd like.

About the books, well I'm not so sure, I think you have to use theirs but uh, haha, they might come out with new ones by the time your kids are starting grade 1. THe Religion books are A-W-E-S-O-M-E. You could use other books for homework or whatever you like.

If you need any other info, you can ask me, or if you'd like you could pm my dad, he's on phatmass as well. :)

Yeah... the stuff I mentioned is all for our homeschooling group at our parish. Little Flowers and Blue Knights info is right here

The Bible study we picked out is on the Gospel of Luke... there's no website for it, though, but it's really good... completely Catholic. :)

I worked for them. I'd say Seton definitely has its advantages and disadvantages. I think a lot of its tests are rather poorly designed at the practical level, and the curriculum tries too hard to "shove Catholicism down the kids' throat." I'm all for a Catholic education, but does this mean that every sentence on an English test has to be about priests, nuns, and Church? This seems like a prescription for teenage rebellion against religion.
And homseschooling's definitely only worth what you put into it. A lot of parents and families who use Seton do not put adequate effort into it (or lack the necessary teaching talent).

I've done my whole school with Seton and I would not say that it's "shoving Catholicism down the kids throat" it is definately not that. Faith is a very important part of ones life, the child is not exposed to that only.

Their tests are not poorly designed, they are simple but require lots of work, not all tests are the same, public school tests are homeschooling ones don't have to the same.

About parents and families not putting adequate effort into it, that's because they realize how much work Seton is. A lot of kids give up and the parents don't encourage them to continue.

hsmom, i'm not even kidding ;) :D:

dudette, if it wouldn't betoo much troulbe, i'd LOVE to see some curriculums. but only if its not a hassle :)

as far as "shoving" it down their throat, i think it depends on how you approach it. if you do all their super fun religious stuff and still have an active, "normal" childhood: sports, playing, barbies, trains, drama clubs, boy scouts, etc etc, i think its just part of the big picture, integrating your faith into every element of your life. sorry, soc, thats one of the most appealing parts of the program :)

although, the testing comment worries me, can you be more specific?

I've taken the tests, I would know.

so are LF & BN like catholicized boy/girls scouts? they talk about badges and sashes and things and earning them with projects, so it sounds similar. fun fun fun :)

My wife has been using Seton for 2 years now and is headed away from it somewhat. (not completely).

It is a good program, no doudt. And in some sense a good starter program because it lays things out very nicely. You know what you need to do every day. The problems we have found with it is it is very intense first of all. That is good and bad. Good if your only homeschooling one kid. Bad if your homeschooling three or four. The counselors have told my wife she doesn't have to do everything but my wife finds that difficult to do.

The Math program isn't all that good. You might want to replace or supplement it with Saxon which my wife finds to be much better. It's more repetative and interesting for the kids. They pick up on it better.

The integrating of Catholicism throughout the books is good. The Caveatis that with history we feel there should be more secular history mixed in. It's good to learn about Catholic History but they also need to learn history on a broader level. Seton is a bit too narrow we feel.

That said, I wouldn't discourage you from starting out using it. As I said it is a good starter program and my wife did not feel qualified to put together her own program until after a couple of years.

Hope that helps.

Ps. if you have your kids in parish CCD programs you will find them to be very bored.

What Thess said. I understand it's very precise, which would just drive me crazypants... Saxon is either too much busywork or the cat's meow, depending on who you talk to...

yea i'm hopinthat by the time we start homeschooling, i will have figured a way out of CCD requirements since i'm sure they'll learn WAY more at HS.

as for the mucho instrucciones, thats what appeals to me right now, sicne i have negative experience. but i'm kinda a "in-charge" person so i think it would be nice to learn how from them and then do my own thing.

in your reference to using Saxon as supplements, thats the text that they use.. isn't it? i mean they have them included in their hgih school curriculum info. maybe i'mreading something wrong? :scratchhead: :idontknow:

Maybe it is me that is confused. I'll have to check with my wife. I know the one the Seton uses is not their own but from another company and it wasn't very good. It didn't give the kids enough repetition. The kids did much better this year in Math that last. I let you know what she uses. Sounds like you've got some time to figure it out.

My little sister was homeschooled with the Seton program! I must say when I would see her assignments and books I was jealous. hehe

If I end up getting married and all that, I want to use Seton too! (I feel like a commercial). haha
