Canadian Gay Marriage and the Winnepeg Statement

I was talking to my brother who is up near the border last night about the woes of the Canadian Church. I had never heard about what he had to say before. I don't want to make this sound like a "they're getting what they deserve thread" but I think it is going to. Perhaps that does not bode well for our future becase, while the US Catholic Church wasn't so blatant about it, there was much undermining of Humanae Vitae in the states as well. I just have to think that this statement and the weakness that it showed among their Bishops at a time when strength would have done so much good, is bearing fruit today. The year following Humanae Vitae's release a statement that garnered the approval of 100 out of 106 Canadian Bishops was realeased. It essentially said to go with your conscience on the matter of contraception. I can't find the original statement. But this article has many choice excerpts. It is right out of Fr. Wilhelm's "Christ Among Us". Gasp.

I have to say I didn't look closely at it. I just linked it because of the many excerpts from the document which I could not find online.

I dint the source very doubtful as well. But I am no internet expert. If such a release has been made by Canadien bishops, something more official, form the church, should be available right?

Cardianl Ouellette, the head of the Catholic Church in Canada, has a repuatation not unlike Cardianl Ratzinger - a stringent, extremely conservative. I strongly doubt that our good Cardinal Ouellette would let something like this slip by.

In any case, contraception is a closed subject, so not matter how much the canadiens cry over it, it won't change. Along with their female-excommunicated-priests, the liberal groups can cry their way to the top of a mountain and back again. Teh church will not change for their account.

The Winnipeg Statement was a disaster for the faith in Canada. It was ill-advised and silly. Thank God most of our bishops are different now.

However, most are now, instead of speaking nearly overtly against Catholic teaching, simply being content with not defending it.

It's very sad. Every day in the paper they attack Catholicism and it's totally up to lay people to defend it.

No, in fact the Winnepeg Statement is a fact. There is plenty of evidence online to support it. This was put out in 1969 by the way.

Believe me... I wish it wasn't fact... it is.

I just noticed this thing was written in 1960s! No wonder I didn't know about this...

The 60s was a very hard periodfor Cahtolicism in Canada, especailly Quebec.

And i sadly tend to agree with you, lay people are left t defend their faith as far as Catholics living in Canada. heck, my family is all Catholic yet I find that each time the topic comes up, I have to defend Catholic teachings, or even denounce faulty opinions on the Pope Benedict XVI.

i was going to say the same.

I saw a show on ewtn a little while ago about Humanae Vitae. It hammered on how much that encyclical was rejected by many of the faithful (who wanted it their way of course, and no one telling them what they could and couldn't do).

I guess we can hope that the Canadian Bishops would retract that statement if they could. I think they are definitely pro-life now, but i am not sure.

I hope they are.

Caridnal Oulette which I referenced in my first post is very conservative and an excellent Cardinal. He has my confidence.

The teachings of the church must be upheld in Canada, and I do believe he is up for the job.

Looks like I am not the only one raising this conclusion. This article about sums it up.

http://catholicinsight.com/online/church/h.../1968wpeg.shtml
Calgary—Reginald Bibby, Canada’s leading observer of religious trends, has found in a recent study that acceptance of homosexuality in Canada runs parallel to the general abandonment of religious practice, particularly among Catholics. Bob Harvey of CanWest News Service reported in the Calgary Herald (April 17, 2004) that the University of Lethbridge sociologist was to present a paper to the Pacific Sociological Association in San Francisco on April 23 that finds a link to lack of religious education and awareness and sympathy with the homosexual agenda. Bibby points out that although a mere 25% of the U.S. population is Catholic compared to Canada’s nearly 50%, the opposition to the gay movement against the traditional family is much stronger in the U.S. than here.

In 1968, Msgr. Foy predicted, “… to permit such dissent will in the end produce more defecting priests, laity to support them, contempt for the Church, contempt for authority, situation ethics, proud subjectivism, and a marxist-like existentialism.” Since 1968, most of these predictions of Catholic behaviour have come true. In an October 2003 article in Catholic Insight magazine, Msgr. Foy confirms, “largely as a result of the Winnipeg permissiveness, Canadian theologians and others have felt free to dissent from the Church’s teaching not only on contraception but on a wide spectrum of magisterial teaching s; e.g., on homosexuality, the ordination of women, on the fundamental option, even on abortion.”

I have no doudt he is. But there will be a battle in winning back the hearts of the faithful who have essentially been stripped of their Catholic faith. There may well be considerable persecution along the way.

Ah yes, I agree. it is an uphill battle and it seems we are slidding further and further down. I've even entertained thoughts of leaving Canada and immigrating to aother nation because sometimes I just get too discouraged. But I remain with my own people, but hold my faith dear, and yes that hold has cost me much indignation frmo others and this is a stubborn trend with no end in sight.

The article posted says it well, even though a majority of Canadiens are Catholic on paper, they don't even realize themselves they are no longer Cahtolic in their hearts. If it was not for 'inconquerable ignorance' i would say this was a grave sin.

Actually, Cardinal Oulette was one of the last bishops to be named Cardinal by JPII. There was a sense of urgency from his frial health to make certain he was well anchored as Cardinal before a successor would take his place.

There are some AWESOME bishops now.

Cardinal Ouellette, Primate of Canada heads them up as awesome Bish #1.

We've got the remarkable Archbishop Prendergast of Halifax, Bishop Henry of Calfary and Bishop Paul-Andre Durocher in Cornwall to name a few of the superstars.

These guys are not shy of the media, are ready to speak out when nevessary and put the two most important things in their dioceses first:

YOUTH
and
EVANGELIZATION

Preferably both together.

God Bless Them!

Paul-Andre Durocher spent many years in Timmins, I know him well. Great priest, awesome bishop. There was a wave of cheers in many Timmins churches including my own when he was named bishop - because we knew he was a superb choice for the position...

Yes, God bless them indeed, and by them God has blessed us a great deal as well. Catholicism in Canada, and make good note of this, is in no way of in route to disapear. Problems are there, we have an uphill battle... but many of us remain and will ramin fiathful and teach this faith firmly into the hearts of our children.

Intresting Fact: Archbishop Terrance Prentergast is unofficial called "Archbishop T-dogg" (or dawg... or whatever it's morphed to now) as a term of endearment by many people... mostly young people.

Archbishop Prentergast is my hero.

Local youth minister (teasing) "Your holiness, may I kiss your rings?"
Archbishop "Sure, just let me put them in my back pocket first."
