Fides_et_Ratio Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 ACK! I leave for vacation (a cruise!) in 4 days... and yesterday I woke up with a sore throat at around 4 in the morning... today I was up at 3.. chugging water and stuffing my mouth with cough drops... today it seems a bit worse (yesterday it was only one side of my throat) and my neck is a little sore... Right now the doctor is not an option... my co-pay is $20... I have ear problems (all the time... lots of infections) and have been taking a lot of decongestants lately... could that have affected anything? My ear had been feeling a little "plugged" lately (hence, all the decongestants) is there anything other than water and cough drops I can do to make it go away? I don't have a fever and my BP isn't really high... so I don't wanna spend the money at the doctor's office if I'm not dying.
Dudette Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 Rinse your throat with salt water three times a day, your throat will be better in no time. Also, take vitamins A, B and C. And Echinicea (sp) if you have any. Prayers for a fast recovery!
cmotherofpirl Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 Gargle with the salt water but drink tea with honey or get sassafras tea.
Brother Adam Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 salt water is the nastiest thing in the world, but it works. You can also buy sprays that will numb your throat if it doesn't seem to be getting better so you can enjoy teh vacation, but those are nasty too and you have to use them about every 8 hours
prose Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 My doctor reccomended for me to boil lemons (quartered) in water, add honey to it, and drink it like tea. It is really good, and it got rid of my sore throat in a day.
Christie_M Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 try a spoon full of huney and lemmon on it...drink hot honey tea and rest...oh pray too!
Carnanc Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 cough drops are the way to go. chew them for a more powerful effect.
prose Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 Halls always seem to make me more sick. Strange, I know.
musturde Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 In Lebanon we take Penedol to cure any sickness. Literally. Take some penedol and gargle salt water. My cuz in Lebanon was stubborn and wouldnt listen to my aunt when she told him to gargle salt water. His sickness got worse and once he finally did it he felt much better.
Donna Posted July 28, 2005 Posted July 28, 2005 Invoke St. Blaise (patron of ailments of the throat - remember the blessing of the throats?) Also, to kill any stuff lurking at the back of the throat: Get a small cup (like dixie cup bathroom size). Pour in 1/2 part water and 1/2 part hydrogen peroxide. To gargle: Throw head back (solution already in mouth) and actually make an "angghhhh" sound as you gargle. I strongly recommend you do this in addition to the lemon/honey in hot water. Do it once for sure before bed and again as often as needed at the FIRST sign of the ailment returning. This has kept me from getting sick or from worsening due to allergies.
God's Errand Girl Posted July 28, 2005 Posted July 28, 2005 I can empathize--I fought a double ear infection for over a month. The infection was treated and dissolved, but I now have constant ringing in my ears. I went to a specialist and after some testing, found that the infections caused some damage to my inner ear. I don't have any remedies, but I do have LOTSA empathy for you. Can you feel it?
Fides_et_Ratio Posted July 28, 2005 Author Posted July 28, 2005 update: throat is not so sore (still a little ouchy, but not nearly as bad), however, now am feeling very achy (blah!) so mom is sending me to the doc tomorrow to figure something out since during the cruise I'm rooming with my grandmother (and I'm not allowed to get her sick). thanks for all the suggestions (and prayers!)

DancesforLove Posted July 28, 2005 Posted July 28, 2005 Have you looked to see if you have any (sorry to be gross) puss pockets on your tonsels? If you don't, chances are its no more than just a minor cold.
Guest T-Bone Posted July 28, 2005 Posted July 28, 2005 (edited) Sounds like your ears are draining and making you thoat sore. Salt water gargles and throat drops containing Phenols are your best bet. As for the aches/fever/other stuff, you may have a low grade infection. [quote]I can empathize--I fought a double ear infection for over a month.
