I was thinking about renting the movie 'Stigmata' tonight but wanted to know first if it is pro or anti Catholic film and is it even a good movie? Thanks homefry's

I saw it and I thought it was pretty good.

The facts stated in the movie through discussions are just about as accurate as you can expect from Hollywood.

The concept of the film however, a 'possession' of a human by a saint is not very catholic however.

In general, i do not believe the movie aims to slander the Catholic church and it actually portrays several Catholic ideology though it does this to a poor extent. I would recomend that you do rent the movie and watch it.

OMG I hated that movie.

It wasn't anti Catholic. It was just wrong in its interpretation of Theology. It promotes the gnostic gospel of Thomas as being this "secret of the Church" (ooooh)

It was a lame movie. I saw it in the theatre. ugh

I haven't heard anything GOOD about it...

I saw it years back and thought it was a total piece of trash. I could never recommend it.

It's pretty much a hideous movie based on Gnosticism. There's even a bit at the end about the Church's "failure" to recognize the Gospel of Thomas.

Haven't seen the movie, but everything I've heard said it was really lame. (and not just for being anti-Catholic - the harshest critics were secular - apparently it just all-round sucked as a movie)

I thought it was anti-Catholic, and a bad movie, I actually saw it twice even.

I felt it was very anti-Catholic.

The Bishops rated it morally offensive and said:

"Exploitative use of religion with an anti-Catholic flavor, frequent violence involving the stigmata and demonic attacks, a shadowy sexual encounter, occasional profanity and rough language. (O) ® ( 1999 ) "

it's been so many years, but doesn't the priest in that movie end up basically leaving the Church to be in a sleazy relationship with that weirdo lady?
And I remember them portraying the Bishop as a liar and murderer. The Church has been covering up the "true" message of Jesus Christ for 2,000 years, and that message is basically "whatever floats your boat". haha!

Its been a long time since I seen it myself. I didn't think much of it, except that it prompted me to do some research into stigmata which I did.

But in retrospec, I should admit it was a poor movie... I can admit I was wrong and spoke a little too quickly in my first post. (time to go to confession - SFD!!!)
