Old_Joe Posted August 3, 2005 Posted August 3, 2005 I just saw the Sixth Sense yesterday for the first time ever. I thought it was awesome. I'm a big fan of his other movies. I like looking for his directing style trademarks, especially his use of religion. Reminds me of Alfred Hitchcock. Has anyone seen Wide awake? I kinda want to, but I don't like the whole idea of Rosie O'Donnell as a nun.
Fearful 1 Posted August 3, 2005 Posted August 3, 2005 (edited) I just saw The Village. That was good as well. Not only is he effective in building suspense and shocking you with the twists and turns that his movies take, he does a great job of developing the personalities of the characters and the relationships that they have with one another. The part in Sixth Sense where the truth finally hits Bruce Willis is really powerful...the flashbacks which run through his mind as he is putting it all together in his head are just chilling. When I saw it in the movie theatre, the entire audience let out a very loud gasp all together at the same time when the realization hit Bruce Willis...it was kind of funny. Signs was also really good and has a spiritual aspect to it. Edited August 3, 2005 by Fearful 1

Old_Joe Posted August 3, 2005 Author Posted August 3, 2005 I like how he'll spend an hour and a half building up the storyline and suspense. Then he uses the last 30 min. to either destroy everything or give a revelation about everything going on. I also like how he doesn't rely heavily on special effects. He likes to insert himself into the film, usually as a minor character with one or two lines. It's fun to watch for him in the film. I wonder if he's Catholic. I know he went to a Catholic grade School. He inserts religion a lot. For example: Mel Gibson played a episcopal priest, Cole (6th sense) hung out in a church and collected religious statues, Ivy has a rosary (village), David goes a funeral (unbreakable), etc.

Guest Eremite Posted August 3, 2005 Posted August 3, 2005 What a coincidence. I was just watching The Sixth Sense on Sunday. It was on ABC. I thought it was cool how he had figures of Jesus and Saints inside his little fort, and they protected him from the Ghosts. I saw Unbreakable by chance. I just went in to see it one day. I had no idea what it was about, who was in it, who directed it, etc. Great movie. I wish previews would die a death. They take away all the suspense, and Shylaman flicks are all about suspense. I haven't seen "The Village" yet, but I will eventually.

He's into "Eastern spirituality" (though I would say Catholicism has a certain influence on him).

It's either a rosary, a necklace, or the watch for trade that her father gave to her.
