Okay first, would it be more appropriate to call it a shrine?

Anyway, as some of you are aware, I'm building the phatmass studio, and in that studio is going to be a small 4'x7' "prayer room".

Here's a rough sketch of my plans:

What I really want to do is create something that looks similar to a high altar on the far wall, with Mary, Joseph and a crucifix in the center. Obviously, there would be no tabernacle.

Maybe a miniature version of something like this:

What is that structure called?

Anyway, we have a blank canvas right now, so any awesome ideas are welcome. It would be cool to incorporate a lot of symbolism in the design as well. I can change the slope of the ceiling, floor tiles, etc, etc. ALL suggestions are needed.

Let's brainstorm.

How high at the ceilings and is it by any chance a gable roof?

The ceilings are 9ft high and right now there is no roof. I can make it whatever I want.

Hang some long incense censers (sp?) from the ceiling. :incense:

There isn't a roof? *drools* So much potential...

I'd make it a gable roof with the gable on the side where you want the high altar motiff.

Then I'd go and get some wood. You can probably find some pre-stylized railings and wooden pillars and such of various sizes, but for the custom pieces, you're probably gonna need a decent carpenter's saw.

Personally, I'm a fan of tiger oak and mahogony, but they're both pretty expensive. Cherry wood is good, too...

Yes! I'll definitely need to figure out a place for a censor.

Unless you are venerating one particular saint there, I think it's correctly called a chapel.

(I am still considering decor/design...)

A chapel is a private place of worship in a residence or institution.

If "worship" has a technical Catholic meaning, requiring an altar, I don't know about it.

call it a phatmassatarium

...or does that make it sound like there would be attendants giving out mints and powdering faces and such?

Actually, a chapel must technically contain a relic of the cape of St. Martin of Tours.

He's being a knowitall. :P:

(The origin of our usage of the world chapel comes from a shrine with that cape in it.)
