The only way I could be an acolyte is if I were going to seminary to become a priest, right?

Actually, this depends on your Bishop. I don't believe it was ever intended for this to be the case.

One of my friends is 20, not going into the seminary, and is an acolyte.
Is there an altar server age limit?  Also, where would I go to learn more info about the acoylites?  I'm 18, and I don't know if it's normal for someone my age to be an altar server.

Nope....I know several retirees that serve Mass.

I also serve Mass and I am 33. Incidentally, I am an acolyte, so it is the ministry that is proper to me.

Where can I go to find more info about the acolytes?

Some of the things that I can do....

I am formally entrusted with lighting the altar candles.

I am a permanent Extraordinary minister of Holy Communion.

I can assist the deacon during the Mass.

I can purify the vessels after Holy Communion.

I can expose and repose the Blessed Sacrament.

Before Vatican Council II, one was ordained to the highest of the minor orders, however, it was changed around 1972 to institution. Now, any MAN can be instituted as an acolyte, although it is rare today.

From the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, no. 65
The acolyte is instituted to serve at the altar and to assist the priest and deacon. In particular it is for him to prepare the altar and the vessels and, as a special minister of the Eucharist, to give communion to the faithful.
I would like to be an acolyte, unfortunately there is nothing on the Richmond Diocese website about it. I'll have to talk to my priest.

It is totally up to the bishop. Most don't do it, because virtually, there is nothing different from an altar server. A few things, though. Also, there needs to be a need. Most bishops don't see the need. Sad really.

I am just getting you ready to hear what your priest will most likely say.
