ForHimAlone Posted August 10, 2005 Posted August 10, 2005 I'm working two jobs this summer, and I've been following a budget plan I made. I want to give 10% in tithing. My question is: Does sending money to a Church-related cause count as tithing in the eyes of the Church? I've been trying to set aside some of my income to send to a community of nuns for their building fund. Does that count as tithing? Or should I still be giving a separate 10% to my parish? Thanks for your time! Kathleen
Pio Nono Posted August 11, 2005 Posted August 11, 2005 JMJ 8/11 - St. Clare of Assisi Prima primo, tithing is taught nowhere in the New Testament. It's a Jewish notion that, though well-intentioned, can lead to one ONLY giving ten percent of their lives to God. He's not content with ten percent, He wants everything. That being said, what you're doing is very admirable and magnanimous. If a charity needs money more than your parish, then feel free to give to them. I don't know of anything that says you should give preference to your parish, especially if the parish may not need the money. Hope this helps. Yours, Pio Nono
