annie Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 OLD person here, grew up in Akron, went to Copley High School, so not everyone here is a YOUNG person from Ohio! love DMB but some lyrics are offensive. Love his voice. And now I live outside Chicago, so I know the band poops on people, poor tourists to our fair and fun city...
homeschoolmom Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 Fellow somewhat old person here... Welcome to phatmass.
ninjakyle Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 I have no problem with a band that poops on people. I mean, you gotta mushy mud pie somewhere right? JK I used to be a huge fan of Dave. And thanks for sharing also (I hope my comment [2nd reply] didn't come across as mean, I was just playing off the pooping comment). I think his music has gone downhill ever since he ditched lillywhite (but I tend to develop nastalgia(sp?) with bands' older songs and have troubles appreciating their new stuff as much). I don't think there is anything wrong with supporting bands that are pro-choice. I don't think there is anything wrong with liking pro-chocie bands. But there are so many pro-life bands out there, I try to support them instead. It is hard for me because I really like bands like Foo Fighters, DMB, and many others on the RFL list. I think Dave has done great humanitarian things in the past, and being from S. Africa gives him a more open perspective. But I think that over the years I have lost a bit of respect for him as a musician (post-lillywhite) and as a role model. Welcome and good luck coming up with another topic as fun as this one.
jp2_rules Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 just kinda wondering aloud here....does dmb actually support PP directly? cause last i remember looking, he and his wife supported an organization that gave money to PP. so it's not like he was even supporting it directly. not that i'm trying to defend him or anything..i'm just trying to remember. does anyone else know? oh, and ninjakyle, i personally think the live albums are the best. i think that's really where they showcase what they can do.

ninjakyle Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 easily one of the most tallented and unique bands out there. I mean, a jazz band with an alt-rock lead singer. and they have some mad skillz, all of them (although, stefan doesn't get much solo time)

Ash Wednesday Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 Welcome, matt. Let's hear it for the oldsters! Whoever gave you that private message was totally wrong. That sort of behavior doesn't belong on phatmass. And your avatar is really cute. I have to say that a great deal of artists and musicians out there really have a screw or two loose much of the time. It's kind of the way a lot of us artists are. I don't know why it is and being an artist myself, I'm trying to figure that one out. Generally speaking, with the exception of artists that are religious, many tend to espouse more "liberal" viewpoints. And in all honesty many mistakenly believe that supporting something like abortion is an act of "mercy." (If people were able to see it for what abortion really is, there wouldn't be so many supporters.... but as is, humanity is blind.) For me personally I like some secular music. I have a strange love/loathe way that I approach Madonna. She has done a lot of really stupid things, obviously. But she also has written a few really good pop songs that I really like, and she seems to be a person that is spiritually hungry and searching for the truth. I think the most important thing is to pray for our celebrities, artists and musicians. Often people either treat them like gods above us -- no longer just human beings in need of our prayers--or else we approach them as being "beyond help." Welcome to phatmass.

dUSt Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 I use to be a big DMB fan, but then found out that they were pro-abortion. I read a lot of articles at the time trying to justify liking them, attempting to give DMB the benefit of the doubt, but unfortunately they ARE unmistakenly pro-abortion. They directly and intentionally support the pro-abortion cause. As good as their music might be, my conscience will not allow me to support them in any way. This includes even listening to their music. I really think that if we are going to have any chance of changing this culture, and if we are truly trying to live our lives for God, then we must show it in our actions. As a wise friend once said, "do not let Jesus be on your lips, and the world to be in your heart".

Not all of the CDs we have are mine, a lot are my dads, but I'm interested to know what other former DMB fans did when they decided they couldn't support them. I know when a former friend of mine realized that her music was killing her she broke all of the CDs (but rather publically) and threw them away.
sweetpea316 Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 Yea...I'm gonna sound like a broken record here and say that I really enjoy their music, but the abortion thing gets to me...
ninjakyle Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 A good friar friend of mine (who still had some possessions because he hadn't made final vows yet) tossed many CDs (including DMB) into the fire. don't know how good that is for the evironment, but it has to do something for your mental peace or something like that
Lil Red Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005
Lil Red, Thank you very much for your kind reply. Yours was so much more pleasant to read than whomever left me the IM calling me a "BABY KILLING B**TARD!!!" I do apologize to the group and to the forum. I did not realize that DMB was pro-choice. I knew they had played in several Vote For Change events, but I guess I never connected the two in my head. That is my fault, and again, I do apologize. I'll make sure to stick to less controversial subjects from now on... Matt.
you know matt, don't just stick to "safe" topics. some may not agree with you, some might. but it's fun to dialogue. we're a phamily, and we argue, but it's important that we talk about stuff we enjoy, stuff that bothers us, etc. don't just take one person's word as Gospel. God bless, Lil Red.
Sirklawd Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 its strange to both want to not listen to them because of their beliefs and then hear a song like Bartender.. which i think is a really GREAT song. Dave is blatently begging for forgiveness and salvation in it. Its a very raw and open song, and it really strikes a chored with me.

I remembered the incident without having to read the article, and I thought the reference was kind of funny And I also agree that the quality of the music has gone down since they ditched Lillywhite as their producer. A guy wrote an article on AntsMarching.org about how demanding of a producer Steve is, but he alwyas gets the best out of people. But the band has become "lazy" recently. You can read it here: http://antsmarching.org/columns/column.php?columnid=27 It pretty much sums up my thoughts on the current state of the band... Matt.
