Fides_et_Ratio Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 What do we mean by "proceed" in the Filioque?
John 16:7 "But I tell you the truth: it is expedient to you that I go. For if I go not, the Paraclete will not come to you: but if I go, I will send him to you."
I came across John 16:7, and immediately thought of the Filioque. I know we like to be all technical by our words (usually the Orthodox are less analytical, so it seems funny in this particular instance sides are flip-flopped), but if Jesus "sends" the Holy Spirit, how would it be inappropriate (or blasphemous in the Orthodox view) to say that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son?
phatcatholic Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 well, to severely oversimplify the matter, i think the orthodox fear that the filioque implicitly denies that all things find their source in the Father. but, this implication is not there. the section on the filioque is here: http://www.phatmass.com/directory/index.php/cat_id/179 there may also be a few articles in the ECF section for that entry: http://www.phatmass.com/directory/index.php/cat_id/213 pax christi, nick
EcceNovaFacioOmni Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 Apotheoun posted a docuemnt from the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity entitled "Clarification on the Filioque" here: http://www.phatmass.com/phorum/index.php?s...77&hl=filioque# Another interesting link (just submitted to the Defense Directory): http://www.catholic.com/library/filioque.asp

EcceNovaFacioOmni Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 Sweet. Is the "Clarification..." document in the Directory as well? If not, I'll hunt it down and submit it.
