franciscanheart Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 Does anyone else own one or more non-catholic bibles? I own two, given to me by a family member and a friend, that I have kept around for reference purposes. First, it lets me see how other people are reading verses we discuss and keys me into why some things might be confusing. Secondly, they often have (in the teen bibles anyway) a section in the back that will give you different page or verse numbers for different teen issues. It's nice to be able to look in the back of it and look for something about friendship (I really can't think of a good example right now). Anyway - I was just wondering if others have them as well.
Aloysius Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 I hate how I have these really nice ornate bibles, but they're non-Catholic versions : they look really nice, but on the inside they're missing alot. basically, I just keep them for decoration. lol.
StColette Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 I think the house has ummm 3 or 4 non-Catholic Bibles, my fave one is my great grandmother's KJV is very beautiful.
Maccabeus Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 Yeah I own a few, KJV, NIV, NRSV etc , but my favourite is the RSV-CE :
Brother Adam Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 KJV, NIV, NKJV, NRSV, RSV (non-Catholic), CEV, GNT, Darby, ESV, WEB, YLT, and others lol.
Mrvoll Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 I have 15 translations on my computer, all but 2 are non-catholic. I found the NIV NT and RSV in a dumpter and my school gave me the Good News Bible and I bought the NKJB for $2.00 (Some of the pages are upside down, it is a metaphor). I also got the NASB NT from my sister.
Ellenita Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005
I have oodles...
Me too! : I still use the NIV......
Sojourner Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 I also have oodles, and still use the NIV. That was the one thing I found really difficult to give up when I converted. I have an NAB, but I rarely read it. I grew up with NIV. I've had the same Bible for 15 years, and it's highlighted and marked up and has notes written on the back pages and such. It's also the version I memorized verses in.

He didn't have a problem with that so now I use the Jerusalem alongside it.
Sojourner Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 Yeah, I felt guilty about it for a long time. I finally came to a point where I just couldn't handle all the changes ... I needed something that provided a connection between my faith today and the faith I grew up with, and that was my Bible.
franciscanheart Posted August 17, 2005 Author Posted August 17, 2005 i dont really understand all that but ... sure. i guess yall have a reason considering yall are converts to the faith - i just sometimes feel awkward with them since they arent Catholic and I'm a cradle Catholic.
Fides_et_Ratio Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 I have lots Hughey, and I'm also a cradle Catholic. And not all of mine are on the computer (though some are). I just like to compare and contrast some things...

Anastasia13 Posted August 18, 2005 Posted August 18, 2005 I have like 12 or 15, but then I am a non-Catholic.
Extra ecclesiam nulla salus Posted August 18, 2005 Posted August 18, 2005 I have an NRSV "Catholic" bible. But i don't like it because its not translated as a catholic bibile its translated as a protestant bible would be especially during the aunnunciation.

I'm a cradle Catholic and so is my entire family, except for one set of my great grandparents lol But we have quite a few KJV. They're actually really good references if u do apologetics work like comparing verses etc.
azaelia Posted August 18, 2005 Posted August 18, 2005 I use the Douay-Rheims and the RSV most of the time. I don't think we have any Non-Catholic Bibles.
