franciscanheart Posted August 18, 2005 Posted August 18, 2005 I think people's favorite hymns say a lot about them and their 'style'. So go ahead.... share.
Thy Geekdom Come Posted August 18, 2005 Posted August 18, 2005 Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence Jesus, My Lord, My God, My All
marielapin Posted August 18, 2005 Posted August 18, 2005 The Prayer of St. Francis - it was sung at our wedding. Salve Regina The King of Glory Laudaute Dominum wow I have lots more but I need to remember their names!
homeschoolmom Posted August 18, 2005 Posted August 18, 2005 Pretty much nothing that I've heard in a long time.
Era Might Posted August 18, 2005 Posted August 18, 2005 My favorite hymn, hands down, is "O come, O come Emmanuel" from Advent.

Thy Geekdom Come Posted August 18, 2005 Posted August 18, 2005 Yeah, that's a good one. So is the classic Easter hymn "O Filii et Filiae"...you'd know the tune more likely than the words.
MilesChristi Posted August 18, 2005 Posted August 18, 2005 Adoro te devote Salve Regina Alma Redemptoris Mater The First Nowell Abide With Me The Church's One Foundation Holy God, We Praise Thy Name
sweetpea316 Posted August 18, 2005 Posted August 18, 2005
Abide With Me
Aaah, yes.... love it! And also, "Be Still My Soul" Is that a Protestant hymn though? I dunno what its origins are...
TrinityAddiction Posted August 18, 2005 Posted August 18, 2005 I couldn't possibly choose a favorite, but I really love Salve Regina, and that's what first came to mind right now. I do like "One Bread, One Body", though, because my godfather's godfather (John B. Foley) actually wrote it and some other songs as well. I'd like to meet him someday.
Noel's angel Posted August 18, 2005 Posted August 18, 2005 I One Bread, One Body too Be Thou My Vision is a goodie
sweetpea316 Posted August 18, 2005 Posted August 18, 2005
Be Thou My Vision is a goodie
Indeed.
1337 k4th0l1x0r Posted August 18, 2005 Posted August 18, 2005 On Eagles Wings City of God I am the Bread of Life Just kidding guys.
DeeDee Posted August 18, 2005 Posted August 18, 2005 Why are you just kidding? Those are great songs. Oh, I guess songs and hymns are different. . . . . I get it. I think. Anyway, I like: All the praise and worship songs we sing in my prayer group. Maybe I should start a praise and worship song thread?

Real feel-good with a snazzy tune, but it doesn't fit into most liturgies. City of God is bad beacuse choir sings it soooo much and it really is theologically fluffy. I am the Bread of Life I just can't stand because it's sung in the first person from God's perspective.
Thy Geekdom Come Posted August 18, 2005 Posted August 18, 2005
On Eagles Wings City of God I am the Bread of Life
Abbot Primate Marcel Rooney once told us about a seminary applicant who gave him a "hymn portfolio" of hymns he'd written. One of them was literally, "Jesus and me, me and Jesus" over and over again. The Abbot Primate asked what was going on with it. He said, "well, yeah...it was originally about my girlfriend, but she dumped me, so I put Jesus' name in her place." Some hymns...

Be Not Afraid is like that too -from God's perspective. Kinda weird now that I think about it. A lot of Christian rock songs are like that too. Oops! I forgot -hymns!
franciscanheart Posted August 18, 2005 Author Posted August 18, 2005 i really like when the kids sing "i am the vine, you are the branches"
