Books for Youth - Suggestions?

Our youth ministry program will soon have a new youth room. I, along with a couple of the youth, are helping our youth minister makeover the new room since when we get it we will be walking on bare floors and have all white walls. Anyway, while chatting just now I realized we should have a small library for the new room. We used to have one in our old youth minister's office but I'm not sure what happened to it. Anyway, I just heard of a book which is a compilation of quotes and letters from JPII to the youth. That would be an awesome book to have. Any other suggestions would be great!

Also, we need to name the room. What did your youth group name your room? How did you come up with the name? Any ideas? We all really love John Paul II so I know we are dedicating at least one wall to him that will be covered in pictures of him and his writings.

Thanks in advance!!

Laura, go to avemarisstella.com and look under the book reviews. I wrote a lot of the reviews and I can recommend all of those books lol

Two suggestions I have are: "We're on a Mission from God" and "Real Love: Answers. Your questions on Dating, Marriage and the Real Meaning of Sex" both by Mary Beth Bonacci.

Great books!

I'm going to be the youth minister at work starting in September. I love the idea of a library for the youth. I love the idea for a seperate youth room. AND I love the idea for naming the room!!!!!

We didn't name our room or have a youth library at my old Lutheran church, but our youth group was called Crosswalk and I think the library idea is awesome. I lost my copy of it, so I can't speak for all of it as a suggestion for something Catholic, but what I've read of Lee Strobel's A Case for Christ was really good and as someone not very familiar with old writings about Jesus, I wish I had read it earlier.

Our youth group is called ACACIA

Ann Ball's "Modern Saints" is always facinating to our young people.

The more intellectual types dig everything and anything C.S. Lewis, especially "A Case for Christianity"

Mother Teresa "In Her Own Words" is nice to glance at (it's full of great quotes)

The Catechism of the Catholic Church, I think should probably be there, along with a few copies of the Catholic Youth Bible.

I had a youth minister that monitored the reading lists at the local high schools and always had really cool reading material about spiritual and biblical allusions in the books everyone was reading.

Have a copy of the Koran. Everyone's very interested in the Islamic faith right now, and many are being taught to be hostile towards it. Write a note in the cover expressing that the Church doesn't teach that the book is divinely inspired, but that it's a great resource to learn about the Islamic faith tradition. I'm sure there's some valuable books expressing the differences and likenesses to Catholic Christianity as well that would be a nice thing to have alongside it.

JP2's "Crossing the Threshold of Hope" is readable.

Pretty much anything that has condensed sections that can be read pretty quickly is good for a youth room. It's nice to have something to be able to digest fairly quickly.

Does anyone know about any books involving entrance to high school? Anything that talks about like drugs, alcohol, and other high school (generally) issues? We have a lot of young high school kids and some of them make me nervous! I think it would be helpful to have something around for them to read....

I suggest:

He died at the age of 24, and his young, short life is very inspirational.

Leo Trese -- this book has excellent, succinct but simple explanations for why we believe what we do. It would be a great reference to have on hand.

Also, it might be good to have some encyclicals and apostolic letters, especially ones like Evangelium Vitae, Humanae Vitae, Veritatis Splendor, Fides at Ratio, On the Most Holy Rosary, Familiaris Consortio, Ordinatio Sacerdotalis, to name a few. It would be good to have references like that around.

I also recommend the Prove It! books that Era Might suggested. They're good explanations for young people.

You might want to check out what Boys Town Press has to offer for those sorts of books. This for example, might be worth looking into. I read the first book in that series before I went to high school, and I thought it was good.

Anyways, those are just a few suggestions. :)

I've never read them but the guy's version is called Wild at Heart and the girl's version is called Captivating. All the youth ministers in S.t Louis love those books.

Also Heather Gallagher has a book called, "A Case for Chastity" that's pretty good.

Some books like Story of a Soul or books about saints might be good to have, too!
