Extra ecclesiam nulla salus Posted August 21, 2005 Posted August 21, 2005 the excommunication is not valid.

Aloysius Posted August 21, 2005 Posted August 21, 2005 Rome has absolute authority to issue an excommunication. You may not judge it "invalid". Rome itself can later judge that excommunication to have been incorrect and invalid but until such a time we are to abide by the judgements of the Supreme Pontiff and the Magisterium. If you have read a certain book that presents a certain canonical argument against the excommunication, you are welcome to hold to that opinion privately , but spreading public dissent from an excommunication issued by the highest earthly authority in the Church is disobedient and sinful. This is why I miss the days where a Catholic book could not be published without an official "There is Nothing in the Way (Nihil Obstat)" and "Let it be printed (Imprimature)".
IcePrincessKRS Posted August 21, 2005 Posted August 21, 2005 And this is why people get the "I do not rep the Church" tag.
brendan1104 Posted August 21, 2005 Posted August 21, 2005 it's common sense- lefebvre decided to do what he thought was needed... St. Athanasius was "excommunicated" too and it was your type of people that were saying things about him that are now said about Lefebvre...
Era Might Posted August 21, 2005 Posted August 21, 2005 (edited) The only reason Athanasius did not comply with his excommunication was because it was not a free act of the Pope. He was exiled and forced to do it by the Emperor. Lefebvre had no such excuse. In fact, Lefebvre was SPECIFICALLY told not to carry out any Episcopal consecrations. He did it anyway. Hence, he was excommunicated. Edited August 21, 2005 by Era Might
IcePrincessKRS Posted August 21, 2005 Posted August 21, 2005 Common sense??? You may as well say "because LeFebvre was chosen by the Holy Spirit to lead the flock and the Pope doesn't know squat" because thats what that argument sums up to.
