Extra ecclesiam nulla salus Posted August 20, 2005 Posted August 20, 2005 I know that the council of NIcea defeated the arian heresy by declaring that Christ and the Father are one and are both equal and from the same substance. in other words Both God. so i was watching the passion last night and christ was in the Garden of Gesthemene and he asked to be spared and then said "Let your will be done Father, not mine" Luke 22:42 42 Saying: Father, if thou wilt, remove this chalice from me: but yet not my will, but thine be done. do they not have the same will? thanks and God Bless, Sam
Pio Nono Posted August 20, 2005 Posted August 20, 2005 JMJ 8/20 - St. Bernard Extra ecclesiam nullus salus, Christ had two natures - human and divine. Each nature has its own will, so that He has both a human and divine will. His human will, though, is always obedient to the divine will because it is not tainted by sin or disfigurement. As a result, He is able to say, "Let not my will, but Thy will be done." His human will wanted to avoid the Passion - that's why He was weeping and freaking out in general. However, His divine will knew that the Passion was the will of the Father for Him. Hope this helps. Yours, Pio Nono
