[quote name='hot stuff' date='Aug 25 2005, 08:39 AM']The Holy Father doesn't know soccer?  So he isn't intrigued by incredibly boring things?  That's awesome!!

Rugby rocks, but soccer rocks my socks!

I love soccer, its weird Benedict didn't know who Pele was,,

if its true then its funny, if not, then who cares? so it was a lip reader-they could be right, they could be wrong, it isn't a serious matter, its all a bit of fun

Hehe, it's all good. The pope doesn't have room in that well-used noggin of his to know absolutely everything... in a way I'm not surprised since he's a bookworm rather than a sporto. :)

its common knowledge though. My mother couldn't tell you a thing about football, but she knows who Pele is

I'm like the Pope in that I have no idea who this pele dude is

i seriously cannot believe that so many people here have never heard of Pele. Is America some sort of bubble??? Its like saying 'what is the World Cup??'

Posted

Is Pele his whole name?

Like Le, Pe

Butler: Hello Mr. Pe.L
"Pele": ehh just call me Pe, thats what all my freinds call me.

is it like that?

Yes, America does live in a bubble. Many people in the U.S. probably don't know who Pele is, especially as generations get younger. Compared to Europe and Latin America, the U.S. doesn't really care about soccer. It doesn't get the same media coverage that baseball, football and basketball do.

Many super-intellectual people (such as the pope) generally will have knowledge-gaps about common mainstream pop-culture at times. I saw a Jeopardy episode once and my brother and I couldn't believe some of the pop-culture questions these people couldn't answer.

His real name is Edson Arantes do Nascimento, but it just doesn't have the same ring to it

It's a pity, they're missing out on a lot

I'm just worried that the Pope is one of those really smart people in your class that get the best grades all the time and seem really smart, but then when it comes to culture and common knowledge, he doesn't have a clue.

If I hadn't been watching a little telly in Europe I wouldn't have known that Diego Maradona started a talk show. :hehe:
