So I was wondering what should I know about the Latin Mass, is it all in Latin, someone from my parish is letting me borrow their missle. Father Dave told me I wouldn't like it. We shall see....

So to all you Latin Mass Possees, what should I know?

These are suggestions from someone who started attending the Tridentine Mass before he was even Catholic.

High Mass

1. Don't think you always have to respond what the servers are written down to say in the Missal. I would just try to follow along and pray the different parts of the Mass quietly.

2. During the Gloria, it may seem odd, but when the priest sits, the congregation sits. Try to sing along if you can.

3. After the priest enters and begins with the sign of the cross (which you may not be able to hear, but see) KNEEL and stay kneeling until he begins the Epistle. The Epistle is chanted on your right. You can sit.

4. At the Gospel, don't stand until the priest actually says "Dominus vobiscum." (so many Novus Ordo attendees stand when they hear Alleluia, and are rather embarassed).

5. You can sit during the Offertory.

6. At the Tridentine Mass you KNEEL at the Sanctus, and cross yourself at the "Benedictus qui venit"

7. O yeah, and many of the things written in the Missal you probably won't hear, so don't get lost thinking "I didn't hear that yet" just be sure to follow the actions at the altar more than the words on the page.

8. At a Tridentine Mass, PRAY PRAY PRAY, it is a very contemplative Mass, that demands you to meditate on what is going on, and the mystery of the Blessed Sacrament.

9. If you go to Low Mass, just kneel, pray and follow what happens, until the Gospel, or you see a whole bunch of people doing otherwise.

that helps a lot!

thanks!

Since this is your first time, don't worry so much about keeping up in the Missal. Prayerfully follow with your eyes and heart all that happens at the altar. Every single movement and gesture are full of meaning. It all points you toward Christ and calls you to unite yourself with the Sacrifice being offered.

One piece of practical advice: when you receive Holy Communion, do not say Amen. The priest will do it for you as he blesses you with the Sacred Host and prays the following: Corpus Domini nostri Iesu Christi custodiat animam tuam in vitam aeternam. Amen.

I hope you have a very prayerful experience this Sunday. Please let us know your reactions after you get back... :)

Best advice I've ever heard (read) is to be silent and to make sure you're silent inside. :)

Works wonders!

If God wants you to go to a Latin Mass he'll put one in your way, or lead you out of your way to go to one.

Don't support schismatics, and don't attend their assemblies!

I agree with Son of Angels. Going to a Schimatic Mass is not worth it. Save up and attend an indult Mass. Spiritual Graces abound!

What's CMRI?

If you are attending Schismatic anything there is something gravely wrong.

I go to Orthodox Divine Liturgies from time to time...the Church says it's possible, as long as you know what you're doing and lots of other stuff.

However, I do not recommend SSPX at all.

Zabbazooey, where do you live?

why not if you are just going to the sspx just to go to the tridentine mass its fine.... its a whole different issue if you suppourt them.

You have to be really careful you're not formally supporting them.

There's more to SSPX than the Tridentine Mass.

Sam, where do you live at?

To me, that's the equivalance of going to an Orthodox Church. It's not like your "supporting them" by attending, you just want to see what it's like. I'd try it, there's nothing wrong attending it to see how its like. Just don't recieve.
