Charlettes web is one of the saddest books ever. I remember watching the movie, when I was 8, or 9 and I cried my eyes out when the spider died.

It is very sad. Very sad indeed.

And cruncy bacon, fo sho. There's just something .... wrong about soggy bacon. I like it nice and crisp.

Homer: Are you saying you're never going to eat any animal again? What about bacon?
Lisa: No.
Homer: Ham?
Lisa: No.
Homer: Pork chops?
Lisa: Dad, those all come from the same animal.
Homer: Heh heh heh. Ooh, yeah, right, Lisa. A wonderful, magical animal.

Okay... I had to follow up with this thread. Our children's book club finished Charlotte's Web and started reading Little House in the Big Woods... And the very first chapter goes into great detail about butchering the pig for the winter. I just thought that they were oddly juxaposed...

Mary and Laura are batting around an inflated pig bladder and I'm thinking, "poor Wilber"...

"Gee Mom, I guess that pig didn't have a gray spider to save his butt."

The book scares me. I don't like spiders.

In fact the only two things that I'm afraid of are

spiders
intimacy

Which makes Wilbur's role terrifying.

Charlotte's Web is one of my all time favorite movies (and I love the book). The music is Teerriiffiicccc! And the voices are great. I had a crush on Fern when I was a kid.

HSmom - your kids are so lucky! we never read those books in school... i had to read them all on my own :)

now you are making me want to reread Charlotte's Web. E.B. White was such a brilliant writer. We are reading his book, "The Elements of Style" for my journalism class...which is giving me SO MUCH homework... but i don't want to do my homework, i want to read kid's books

Just don't name the bacon "wilbur" and you'll be fine.

Must be fiction.

No cricket that ever entered Times Square has lived...
