Iacobus Posted September 5, 2005 Posted September 5, 2005 Argh, I love and hate math at the same time. I have been working on the example problems and the stuff we do in class and have been understanding it and when I went to do my homework over the weekend, I was lost. So please please pray I can get it together. We all have bad math days, I just can only have them like once a year, best if it is a Thursday. I am meeting with the prof this afternoon at 4, and I can take the class S/D/F (Basicly, pass or fail) if I need to. I don't need calc II but I want it and I need help, like basicly, another student to work with. We can work in groups, but I only know two people in the class, and neither of them have been overly inviting, I think it is one of those unsaid things. Please pray a fast prayer that I get this figured out and succeed.

philothea Posted September 5, 2005 Posted September 5, 2005 Prayers! (And for you too, Miss Zooey. ) Odd as it seems, I find using really bright light helps a lot when studying complex math. Math...
philothea Posted September 5, 2005 Posted September 5, 2005 Oh, BTW, if you need math help, and you can navigate Usenet, sci.math is a very useful place. Fair warning: Don't be too lazy (show what you've tried so far), and do let them know if you're asking for homework help. Most of the people answering will be college professors and they get irked if they think you're trying to cheat.
Proud2BCatholic139 Posted September 5, 2005 Posted September 5, 2005 I need math prayers as well. I have too take 4 math classes. Not because I failed, it's because so I can become better and smarter. Just keep practicing, let's keep practicing together, and it'll come. (It's mostly algebra for me.) Math = Power!!!! Yay! Don't give up on math.
Iacobus Posted September 5, 2005 Author Posted September 5, 2005 I can always take it pass fail if I have to, I would rather not for reasons of pride, lol. Maybe I should confess that and hope my penace is that I have to take Calc II pass fail, but that would probly be unethical. I enjoy my math classes, in fact I love them. It is just that every now and then you have a day in math or chemistry or whatever when nothing makes any sense. I went to the prof today and meet with him for half an hour or so and understood it so well. I was excited and happy. I mean it, I was excited about how we used calculus. Though, he also showed me Maple (for those in the know) so I got even more excited. Keep up the prayers guys, they are working so far today, know if I would only remeber my stuff from Alg II and Pre-calc (how can they expect me to know trig id's or equations for circles, they aren't even fuctions for Pete's sake).
philothea Posted September 5, 2005 Posted September 5, 2005 (edited) I don't know if this will be reassuring or depressing, but I'll share anyway. I don't know what you're majoring in, but I have spoken to many now-successful physicists and they say they never understood much as undergraduates. The work was too fast, and too complicated, and all they could do was desperately cram and hope to pass the test. Then they'd forget it all and work frantically on the next part. Understanding came when, as impoverished graduate students, they tutored the undergrads. I think the pace for hard sciences and mathematics is so fast that no one really "understands" much at the first go. I think your brain gets pummeled to a mush and then reforms itself into an organ that does mathematics. Later on, you understand it. Continued prayers. : Edited September 5, 2005 by philothea
Iacobus Posted September 6, 2005 Author Posted September 6, 2005 I am probly going to major in the sciences, likely in either biochem, chem or bio. I want to get an M.D. and go into research. I can agree fully with what the physicits said about going to fast and hard. Yeh, not much choice but to really cram and rush it. What I love is that the stuff we are covering won't ever be used by us in this manner. The prof basicly told me "Don't worry too much about it, if you ever have to do this is real life, even in acadmica as a mathmatian, you would use something like Maple which does the math for you." :-D
Theoketos Posted September 6, 2005 Posted September 6, 2005 May your suffering bring you grace and humility in the name of Jesus. Ave Maria.
kaidoh Posted September 6, 2005 Posted September 6, 2005 i love math and hate it to, so i know how u feel prayers
let_go_let_God Posted September 6, 2005 Posted September 6, 2005 I will pray man, but I start my math class on the 7th so I will probably be in the same boat for a while as well. God bless- LGLG
Proud2BCatholic139 Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 After a few days of school, I realize, yeah, all my math classes will pay off in the end. I got 60 math problems tonight. I got them done in 30 minutes. I felt proud of myself. And for those who know me, I don't know, I take forever with my homework. My point is, is the more you practice, the more you'll grasp and get the hang of it. Keep praying. God loves you!!!! :
