Gay marriage bill approved in California
September 7, 2005 - 1:20PM

The California Legislature became the first legislative body in the US to allow same-sex marriages, as gay-rights advocates overcame two earlier defeats in the Assembly.

The 41-35 vote sends the bill to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The bill's supporters compared the legislation to earlier civil rights campaigns, including efforts to eradicate slavery and give women the right to vote.

"Do what we know is in our hearts," said the bill's sponsor, San Francisco Democrat Mark Leno.

"Make sure all California families will have the same protection under the law."

Wasn't it the Beach Boys who sang "I wish they all could be California Boys." ??

Living here is crazy. :topsy:

I don't really see our governor signing this, going so blatantly against the will of the people. Let's hope I'm right...

Does the federal government have any power to over-rule their decisions?

But if they have a sham marriage ceremony and send in a joint tax return, the Federal Government wll get them for fraud, since the Feds do not recognize gay marriage.
