A Good Catholic Bible.

Hello everyone, I was just wondering, I'm wanting to learn more of the Catholic Bible, considering it is Sacred Scripture and it has the all the books in there.

I'm just wanting to know, which Catholic Translation is the most Reliable? I heard New American Version is good.

But is there any others?

my impression is that the general consensus is for the RSV-CE. here's a good article on the various catholic translations:

Indeed, the overwhelming consensus on this board -- and among the vast majority of orthodox Catholics, including Scripture scholars and theologians -- is that the Revised Standard Version, Catholic Edition (RSV-CE) is far and away the best and most reliable translation of Sacred Scripture for serious study. It is an extremely literal (word-for-word) translation of the original Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic Scriptures. If you're only looking for one Bible, this is the one to get. Ignatius Press publishes it.

For devotional reading, the poetic and literary Jerusalem Bible (NOT the New Jerusalem Bible) is a beautiful, scholarly, highly-touted translation that should not be overlooked. It is a dynamic translation; the translators/editors, among them J.R.R. Tolkien, took certain liberties with the original texts to make it more readable. Doubleday currently publishes it.

Those are my top two. Another great one is the classic and majestic Douay-Rheims Version (DRV), which I believe phatcatholic's link talks about.

Cheers.

Dear Mr. Dude :D:
Is that the one that is also called "The Ignatius Bible?"

That one I have. I LOVE IT, NO INCLUSIVE LANGUAGE.

the RSV-CE is a more literal translation. the DRV is more poetic in nature. that doesn't necessarily make it objectively "better." its just a matter of preference.

The RSV-CE is the Ignatius Bible. Soon, Ignatius will be releasing the RSV-SCE, with a revision of archaic language.

I like the DRV, but the nature of the language makes it somewhat unaccessable. I don't like thee's and thou's, it comes off as sanctimonious when quoting to someone else.

LET ME KNOW WHEN I WANT TO GET ONE.

I had a DRV and I liked it but because of the language I didn't understand alot of what was being said. I took it to our Adoration chapel and put a note on it that it was "free to a good home." :)

Well, I just purchased the RSV-CE Ignatius Bible -- if the RSV-SCE is simply a minor clean-up of the occasional "thee's" and "thou's" that are found in the RSV-CE, I don't think I'll be shelling out.
