Well, I just purchased the RSV-CE Ignatius Bible -- if the RSV-SCE is simply a minor clean-up of the occasional "thee's" and "thou's" that are found in the RSV-CE, I don't think I'll be shelling out.

Thank you, that answered my other question.

I may still buy it, I am still thinking about it.

"Mr. Dude" :) what do you think?

I personally like the NAB (New American Bible), reading all the "thees" and "thous" confuses me in other translations (but it sounds nice). Though you have to becareful with the footnotes, they aren't always "correct".

However, I would also like to get a DRV and RSV-CE (or RSV-SCE).

It's really a matter of preference. I am holding off for the RSV-SCE because I think the "thee" and "thou" comes off wrong when discussing the Bible with people who aren't as "into" it. Whenever I hear somebody say "thou shalt not..." I think of KJV-onlyists who go about evangelization all wrong. That's just the way I feel. There won't be any difference in meaning between the text of the RSV-CE and the RSV-SCE.

There won't be any difference at all... except for rendering the occasional "thee" and "thou" into "the" and "you." At least, that's what I'm banking on when I say I'm not going to shell out for the RSV-SCE. ;)

Although it's a bit pricey to get the whole set, I've recently begun reading the Navarre Bible (starting with the gospel according to Matthew) and have been very pleased with it so far. It is essentially the RSV-CE with New Vulgate and rich commentaries (the commentaries take up more space than the English text). It's what I've been looking for for a long time: a faithful, close-to-original-languages translation, but with nihil obstat, doctrinally-sound notes and commentaries. Based on what I've read so far, I recommend it to those who can afford it.

New American Bible, Revised Standard Version-Catholic Edition, Jerusalem Bible and the Douay-Rheims Version are all good Catholic translations and I'd recommend all of them. Everyone has their own preference.. some like the NAB because it's the translation that American Catholics use during the Liturgy... some like the RSV-CE because it's the most literal and academic, some like the DRV and Jerusalem Bible because they're the most poetic. They're all good Bibles. Personally, I use the RSV-CE for my regular bible study.
