argent_paladin Posted September 10, 2005 Posted September 10, 2005 Since Benedicts encyclical should be coming out in the next few months, I was curious to see how many PMers have read one. If you haven't then you have to read: John Paul II Centesimus Annus (social, political, economic issues, masterful!) Fides et Ratio (on the relationship of faith and reason, the most philosophically dense encyclical ever) Paul VI Humanae Vitae (Life Issues) John XXIII Mater et Magistra (and Veterum Sapientia for all Latin lovers) Pius XII (Musicae Sacrae for lovers of sacred music) Divino Afflante Spiritu (on inspiration in scripture) Pius XI Casti Connubii (on marriage) Pius X Pascendi Dominici Gregis (Against modernism: important to understand the current problems of the Church, written almost 100 years ago!) These, I think, are the most important (the ones in parenthesis are not as important, but very interesting and timely). Gohere to read them! Or to the vatican website: www. vatican.va Also, please write your favorite encyclical and why. Mine is Ecclesia de Eucharistia, because it was JP2's last, it was the first encyclical that I read with anticipation (I downloaded it, printed it, and read it on the day it came out!) I remember discussing it over dinner with my Dominican brothers (it was the only encyclical to be promulgated when I was a Dominican). Plus, it is beautiful and encouraged me to experience mass in a deeper fuller way.
Era Might Posted September 10, 2005 Posted September 10, 2005 John Paul's Encyclicals are unique because each of them were notable documents. Most Popes have maybe a few Encyclicals we remember, but certainly not all of them. My favorite JPII Enyclical is Ut Unum Sint.
Laudate_Dominum Posted September 10, 2005 Posted September 10, 2005 If anyone votes "I've read them all!" I'm going to flip my wig.
dspen2005 Posted September 10, 2005 Posted September 10, 2005 i just finished reading Veritatis Splendor... What an awesome read? I was truly moved and inspired by the words of JP2. I am now looking forward to reading what Benedict has to say. I must say, from reading B16's book, Introduction to Christianity (written while he was Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church), I like his style better than JP2's -- it is simpler, yet still so profound. THis doesn't take away from JP2's writings, just my own personal preference....
Laudate_Dominum Posted September 10, 2005 Posted September 10, 2005 My favourite Papal letter of all time: Ascolte Fili (Listen Son) - Pope Boniface VIII Written to the King of France who was being disobedient to the Pope. The title says it all.
Fides_et_Ratio Posted September 10, 2005 Posted September 10, 2005 The BEST encyclical EVER.. hands down: "Fides et Ratio" by John Paul II It was my first encyclical (and started an encyclical reading frenzy...!!!) I've read most of JPII's encyclicals, and other than that, I have just read the more well-known encyclicals of other Popes.
DarthVader.com Bot Posted September 10, 2005 Posted September 10, 2005 I have read them all. My favorite is Pascendi Dominici Gregis of Pope Pius X.
