That would I am quite sure depend on how late and why I believe. I've heard if your there by the Gospel you have fullfilled it but I find that to be a strech. If you get much past the first reading I'd bet most preists would tell you to come back another time. It also of course depends on why you were late. If it is because of pure laziness (which I have been guilty of in my past more lukewarm life) then that is a more serious matter. If you got hung up in normally dependable trafic that would be less serious and one might be able to justify getting there by the Gospel. As a practical matter I would prefer to come back and here the first two readings. How often also is a factor. The bottom line I think is in your heart are you making sufficient effort to get to mass on time. If the answer is no then you need to examine it closely.

9/11 - Twenty-fourth Sunday

If you come in after the Offetory, then it doesn't count. This is for people who have serious reasons to be late - i.e., a man's wife is in labor yet needs to go to Mass, so he waits until the last second to get there. Coming in late to Mass for no urgent reason before the Offetory, though it counts, is considered sinful - if nothing else, it shows poor taste and manners. It's like showing up late for the Crucifixion - if you're gonna stand by the cross, stand by Jesus the whole time, not just for his last breath.

I beleive if you miss the Gospal, then you can not recieve Holy Communion.

I hope I helped.

One who is consistently late without good reason needs to reflect on this verse.

Rev 3
[16] So, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spew you out of my mouth.

I was also taught that if you miss the Gospel you cannot fufill your Obligation. Like last week I thought mass was at 10:30 at a local parish, and one of my roomates and I got there during the Eucharist. Needless we turned around and went back to our apartment to find another parish to go to. We were able to go to the local Cathedral at 11:00 am. My roomates thought it was wierd that I know the diocese's web page.

Don't sweat it as long as you weren't saying to yourself "ah good, I won't have to sit there so long" and I'm sure you weren't. Be at peace. Might not hurt to open the good book and take a glance at the readings you missed however.

You also might want to in a gentle and suttle way, let her know of your love for the Mass and how you want to be there on time.

Now wait, I have a Mass question about late Sunday Masses... Would a Mass at 7pm (on Sunday) fulfill a Sunday obligation?

Posted

I sure hope so, I have gone to Mass at 7pm many times.

I don't even like coming in to a movie after the previews.

If I'm going to be after the processional, I would probably prefer to wait until the next mass. But since I am fastidious about promptness, I haven't tested that theory yet.

While I am no canon law expert the only question I have ever come accross in this area is when does a mass fullfill the obligation on the eve. The answer seems to be after 4 pm if it uses the same readings in general. There seems to be no question in canon law (though I am no expert) of whether a Mass at any time on Sunday is valid and I have never known this to be a problem. Here are the canons that I know of that apply.

Can. 1247 On Sundays and other holydays of obligation, the faithful are obliged to assist at Mass. They are also to abstain from such work or business that would inhibit the worship to be given to God, the joy proper to the Lord's Day, or the due relaxation of mind and body.

A few parishes in our diocese have 7 pm Masses as did the last diocese I was in and I am sure they are fine.

Can. 1248 §1 The obligation of assisting at Mass is satisfied wherever Mass is celebrated in a catholic rite either on a holyday itself or on the evening of the previous day.

By the way the Eve masses are a rather new thing. I believe they came in with the 1983 Code of Canon Law. When I was young we did not have them. Midnight Mass a Christmass was much more popular then. This would indicate that while an indult was allowed for the eve Masses, the full day Sunday was always allowed and still is.

The Homily is too late for a fullfillment of the obligation most certainly.
If you go to Mass again, it is not a mortal sin in my opinion.
You can recieve communion twice in one day so you could have recieved as long as your intent was to go again in my opinion. One of them has to be a full Mass.

If you got their late due to your own fault and you do not intend to go to Mass later, I think there is a problem you need to address in confession with your priest.

Can. 917 A person who has already received the Most Holy Eucharist can receive it a second time on the same day only within the eucharistic celebration in which the person participates, without prejudice to the prescript of ⇒ can. 921, §2.

Can. 918 It is highly recommended that the faithful receive holy communion during the eucharistic celebration itself. It is to be administered outside the Mass, however, to those who request it for a just cause, with the liturgical rites being observed.

Most certainly both can be at Mass. One has to be. i.e. you cannot recieve twice at a hospital with a minster to the sick.
