Odd verses in scripture

Recommended Posts

I for some reason thought of this verse today. I find it to be very odd.

Mark
[47] But one of those who stood by drew his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his ear.
[48] And Jesus said to them, "Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me?
[49] Day after day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me. But let the scriptures be fulfilled."
[50] And they all forsook him, and fled.
51] And a young man followed him, with nothing but a linen cloth about his body; and they seized him,
[52] but he left the linen cloth and ran away naked. :idontknow: :idontknow:

Anyone have a clue what this is about? It's purpose?

Got any other odd verses? I can think of a couple.

Knowing St. Mark, there's probably a whole story behind that verse that the apostles would have known just from reading it, but the Evangelist just didn't take the time to write it down.

Heck, Mark was really young at this time, maybe the kid in the linen cloth was him.

I think the point is that the young man didn't care about shaming himself by running around naked, or anything else. He was gonna abandon Jesus no matter what.

51: The identity of the young disciple who flees away naked has attracted many guesses through the centuries. Whoever or whatever he was, in the present context he is the individuation of 14:50, "And all left him and fled"

this is what one of my commentaries (a Protestant one, FYI) says:
Mar_14:51
A certain young man - Who this was we have no means of determining, but it seems not improbable that he may have been the owner of the garden, and that he may have had an understanding with Jesus that he should visit it for retirement when he withdrew from the city. That he was not one of the apostles is clear. It is probable that be was roused from sleep by the noise made by the rabble, and came to render any aid in his power in quelling the disturbance. It is not known why this circumstance is recorded by Mark. It is omitted by all the other evangelists. It may have been recorded to show that the conspirators had instructions to take the “apostles” as well as Jesus, and supposing him to be one of them, they laid hold of him to take him before the high priest; or it “may” have been recorded in order to place his conduct in strong and honorable contrast with the timidity and fear of the disciples, who had all fled. Compare the notes at Mat_26:56.

A linen cloth cast about his naked body - He was roused from sleep, and probably threw around him, in his haste, what was most convenient. It was common to sleep in linen bed-clothes, and he seized a part of the clothes and hastily threw it round him.

The young men - The Roman soldiers. They were called “young men” because they were made up chiefly of youth. This was a Jewish mode of speaking. See Gen_14:24; 2Sa_2:14; Isa_13:18.

Laid hold on him - Supposing him to be one of the apostles.
Dunno if that helps or not.

This is one of my all time favs

Proverbs 26:11

"The detail about the young man in the linen cloth is found only in St. Mark. Most interpreters see in it a discreet allusion to Mark himself. It is probable that the Garden of Olives belonged to Mark's family, which would explain the presence there at night-time of teh boy, who would have been awakened suddenly by the noise of the crowd." - Navarre Bible Commentary

Thanks for the comments. They are helpful, especially the Navarre BC comment.

There's one in Sirach (I think) that goes somehting like:
"Better for a man to stand on the corner of the roof of his house, than be in a room of dangerous women."

What about when those children were devoured by she-bears for making fun of the prophet's bald head? hehe I always thought that one was a trip. :)

Revelation 2:13a - "I know where you live..."

haha. In context, its not as funny of course, but its hilarious to leave it at that.

Sirach is a great book to read...

If you eat to much, go off and vomit and you will feel better...

Something like that is in there about behavior at dinner parties...

The OT has lots of mentions to beware of the happenings under "spreading trees"

There was a sign in our old church's nursery that said:

Here was one quoted in the Simpsons, Matthew 21:17

"And he left them, and went to Bethany, and he lodged there."

Homer was trying to prove that he knew the Bible, so he was trying to point out his favorite Bible verse. You could tell he was just making the numbers up, but somone knew what the verse was, and quoted it back to him. Trying to save face, Homer simply said "Yea, just think about that for awhile!!!"

That show always cracks me up :lol_roll:
