Brother Adam Posted September 13, 2005 Posted September 13, 2005 I expressed my interest in helping with RCIA after all everyone has done for me and Teresa in teh last year, but wasn't goign to push anything that I could be called upon if God desired me to help. To my shock today my teacher told me I had definitely "made the cut" and would be on the FUS RCIA team this year. I'm humbled.
Sojourner Posted September 13, 2005 Posted September 13, 2005 That's awesome! I'm sure that will be a great experience for you.
Brother Adam Posted September 13, 2005 Author Posted September 13, 2005 yeah. There are people far more brilliant than myself at this university that could have been choosen so I'm very excited. I actually know one of the guys who will be in RCIA. It is one of my coworkers boyfriends.
Era Might Posted September 13, 2005 Posted September 13, 2005 I was actually just thinking today about signing up to help with RCIA (they had some forms in the Church). What exactly does it entail? Do you need to have studied theology?

I think there's actually an organization somewhere that does RCIA training ... I just can't remember the name.

Then again, it's not like people in RCIA are poring over the Summa (I don't think, anyway). Edited September 13, 2005 by Era Might
Brother Adam Posted September 13, 2005 Author Posted September 13, 2005 You really should have a strong grounding in the faith to take others through the catechumanete stage, or systematic theology stage of RCIA. I would suggest any number of books including the official RCIA book, "The Awe-Inspiring Rites of Initiation", "Journeybread for the Shadowland", Mystery we Proclaim

No degree necessary to be a catechist. Most actually don't have degrees. Those that do usually end up directing the program. Reading your posts I think you have the knowledge to be a catechist. It all depends then if God is calling you to such a vocation.
Sojourner Posted September 13, 2005 Posted September 13, 2005 I started to get involved with RCIA at my parish, but I opted out because of other time commitments I had. Teaching isn't my strong suit ... I enjoy conversation much more than I enjoy having to impart specific knowledge to people.
Fides_et_Ratio Posted September 13, 2005 Posted September 13, 2005 wow, congrats Bro. Adam! I'd like to start helping out with RCIA at my parish (but I think I'm going to wait until I've got the whole "teaching CCD" thing under my belt... I can only handle so much "new" stress at once!
jgirl Posted September 13, 2005 Posted September 13, 2005 Congrats! I just got asked by one of the Missionaries of Charity Sisters in town if I would be willing to prepare two teenagers (13 and 16) for Baptism and First Communion at the Easter Vigil. I'm pretty excited about the opportunity!
Dust's Sister Posted September 14, 2005 Posted September 14, 2005 Congradulations, for the first time I am actually taking RCIA classes to learn more about the faith, and after attending two or three classes, I got excited to come back... so I decided to become a volunteer sponsor. Good luck with everything!
Brother Adam Posted September 14, 2005 Author Posted September 14, 2005 Yeah. I guess they had 25 people volunteer (and this is before anything even came out on RCIA this year) and so far only 3 have shown interest in attending so obviously only a couple will be able to teach until the group grows. I feel so blessed I get to be one of those people who gets to start helping right away. I am praying for God to instill a great since of humility in me.
