Nathan Posted September 14, 2005 Posted September 14, 2005 I'm looking to get into some good Catholic Scripture scholars. Any suggestions? The only one I'm familiar with at this point, aside from "mainstream" guys like Scott Hahn, is Raymond E. Brown.
Laudate_Dominum Posted September 14, 2005 Posted September 14, 2005 I've learned a lot of Raymond Brown, but his scholarship is in bad taste much of the time and I question the catholicity of his methods. I don't know of a biblical scholar in the English speaking world who was as prolific as Brown, yet more orthodox in approach. I can think of countless biblical peeps whose books I've thought were good, for example, Ignace De LA Potterie, Damasus Winzen, William Farmer, and many others.. I found this bibliography on Scott Hahn's site which looks really good. Nathan Posted September 14, 2005 Author Posted September 14, 2005 I have, and it's great -- for personal online Bible study. But I'm simply looking for the names of some good, Catholic Scripture scholars (who aren't named Hahn or Brown) so I can seek 'em out. Oddly enough -- or maybe not that odd, I dunno -- the majority of the scholars cited on SalvationHistory.com by Hahn & Co. are Protestant. I guess it means there just aren't that many orthodox Catholic ones out there who are publishing books.
Nathan Posted September 14, 2005 Author Posted September 14, 2005 Laudate -- thanks for the info. Good stuff.
phatcatholic Posted September 14, 2005 Posted September 14, 2005 Fr. William G Most is excellent, i think. check out his library of works: http://www.catholicculture.org/docs/most/start.cfm also, check out the authors of these articles: http://www.catholicculture.org/search/resu...label=Scripture
cmotherofpirl Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 Start with Father Most, and run away from Brown as fast as you can. He does not qualifiy as faithful catholic reading.
