Brother Adam Posted September 18, 2005 Posted September 18, 2005 that Dietrich Von Hildebrand is not a household Catholic name? I'm reading a work of his, and wowsers! it is amazing. I amazon'ed his name and he has a lot of great books out it appears - but most of them are out of print. Have you read anything by him that is exceptionally good?
Era Might Posted September 18, 2005 Posted September 18, 2005 Most of today's "household names" were not hardcore theologians. Sheed, Chesterton, Belloc. They were all more-or-less populist writers. The heavy thinkers (Von Balthasar, de Lubac, Von Hildebrantd) are household names in theological circles, but not among the masses.
Brother Adam Posted September 18, 2005 Author Posted September 18, 2005 say it ain't so De Lubac? Von Balthasar? not household names? Their texts line my bookshelves!

Most catholics-in-the-pew couldn't tell you who these men were, let alone have their books. But, they probably have at least a passing acquaintance with the populist writers (particularly the modern apologists). Edited September 18, 2005 by Era Might
Era Might Posted September 18, 2005 Posted September 18, 2005 Oh, and p.s, Pope Pius XII called Dietrich Von Hildebrand a "20th century doctor of the Church".
Fides_et_Ratio Posted September 18, 2005 Posted September 18, 2005 Catechesis, Bro. Adam... you are an REd major to make those brilliant philosophers and theologians household names. No longer will their works line the shelves of conservative theological circles!
Brother Adam Posted September 18, 2005 Author Posted September 18, 2005 lol, yes! A revolution of good theology with true depth and wisdom! woohoo.
Thy Geekdom Come Posted September 18, 2005 Posted September 18, 2005 All I know is my philosophy prof's teacher was Von Hildebrand
Luthien Posted September 18, 2005 Posted September 18, 2005 I love Von Hildebrand. His book Man Woman And The Meaning Of Love was one of the books that shed so much light on how spouses need to love.

p-hawk Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 His "Transformation In Christ" has been called The Imitation of Christ for the 20th century. And rightly so.
Fides_et_Ratio Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 Yay for awesome philosophers and theologians!

Remember the 12 Apostles were fishermen, tax collectors, ordinary people - populists who turned a few conversions themselves.

Most of us don't have the time to dig deep. By the time the kiddos are in bed, my brain is so tired I can barely make heads or tails out of the Debate Table. I loved deep reading in college. But who has the luxury to read it now? My main focus is how to get my children (and the children I teach in CCD and Little Flowers) to understand and live the Gospel. It'd be great to build a tent and live on the mountain reading all the time but Christ sent the apostles down off the mountaintop.
