theculturewarrior Posted September 18, 2005 Posted September 18, 2005 Seriously. My coworker takes his friends to the local Chinese buffet, and they play Fear Factor. One of them picks something for the other one to eat, and they all cringe in horror. I couldn't believe that when he told me. I was like, a Chinese buffet? That's not even real Chinese food! (There's no Chinatown in the Valley). It's all starting to make sense, though. There is a difference in cultures here. One emphasizes tradition and precedent, the other emphasizes progress and change. It's the anglo mentality. I love trying new foods! There is a clash of cultures, when an anglo discovers that a Mexican has never had Thai food. "Oh, you poor thing, we have to take you to get some Thai food as soon as we get out of the Valley." But that's like playing Fear Factor to him! I've learned to accommodate. Whenever I throw a party, it's tacos, so very tasty and good for you,, hamburgers, or hot dogs. Everything else is "international food."
jmjtina Posted September 18, 2005 Posted September 18, 2005 i was really scared to try real Chinese food. i wanted to stay with my rice and beans. but it turned out okay. They had to trick me into eating it, but it was actually good and I'm glad I did. And i've tried Korean food. It is even better. It's spicer than I thought, but then It could have just been our hosts. :
theculturewarrior Posted September 18, 2005 Author Posted September 18, 2005 You're brave! (I love Korean food, by the way. There is a great Vietnamese restaurant in Corpus called Hudat's. )

Who Dat? I saw him in Mass in Rockport once. He was sooooooooo dreamy.

I suppose it is kind of unique to want to try everything.
jmjtina Posted September 18, 2005 Posted September 18, 2005 we only complain if it's "imitation" mexican food. *cough* Taco Bell *cough*
theculturewarrior Posted September 18, 2005 Author Posted September 18, 2005 My coworker was afraid of my split peas (but loved tacos, so very tasty and good for you, de tripa).
jiyoung Posted September 18, 2005 Posted September 18, 2005 Korean food is good. So is Vietnamese...and Thai food...Korean food is lucky enough that because it hasn't gotten quite as popular with non-Koreans, there haven't been pale imitations cropping up everywhere. I'm pretty adventurous as far as food...I'd really like to try Indian, Peruvian, Ethiopian...it's good that I live in Southern California, because since the population's so diverse, I should be able to find authentic [culture here] food not too far from me.
theculturewarrior Posted September 18, 2005 Author Posted September 18, 2005 Middle eastern food is my fave, but it's hard to find down here. A friend of the family is Chaldean, though. Good FOOD!
Kilroy the Ninja Posted September 18, 2005 Posted September 18, 2005 (edited) You know it's funny... I am half Mexican (not mexi-can't) and I loves me some ethnic food. I love Japanese, Chinese, Thai, India, Middle Eastern, Irish (Slainte baby!), French, Italian, Greek, English, Polynesian, German, Swedish, Norweigen, Cajun/Creole, Vietnamese, American, Texan (yes we have our own foods!) and prolly a couple others I forgot about. And, of course, most Mexican food. I say most because there are at least three things I simply will not eat. Nope. Won't do it. Can't make me. Only for a million dollars. Ok, maybe $100,000. well, er, $30,000. That'd change my life for sure. Anyways, the three things are - Beef Brains, Beef Tongue and Beef Tripe - you know, Menudo. (What kind of people name a boy band after cow intestine?????????) Actually I make it a point to not ingest anything considered an internal organ really. No matter the nationality. Of course there's haggis too. Blech. I'm weird. Edited September 18, 2005 by Kilroy the Ninja

theculturewarrior Posted September 18, 2005 Author Posted September 18, 2005 That is, unless you're from California where everything defies logic.
Kilroy the Ninja Posted September 18, 2005 Posted September 18, 2005 You're probably right! The other half is Dutch! (Did I mention I love gold?) And while I was born in San Antonio, Texas, I did live in Long Beach, CA for five or six years between the ages of 4 and 10. It's why most people don't think I have an accent. Yee haw.
theculturewarrior Posted September 18, 2005 Author Posted September 18, 2005 I can tell you have an accent already! YEEHAW! is one word, capitalized and punctuated with an exclamation point. (In Texas, anyway).

you are missin out man!! that stuff ROCKS! though i do admit one thing: had i known what i was eating, i probably wouldn't have tried it. but i didnt know so i did try it and now i like it! yum! *licks lips* i also want to note that i believe this is the reason i WILL try other foods. because mexicans eat just about everything from just about every animal, there's really no harm in trying it with different spices or cooked a different way! yay for ethnic foods!

sweetpea316 Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 I like Mexican food of any sort. Even the cheap imitation kind at Bueno or Bell. I just like food. In general.
