dUSt Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 http://www.crisismagazine.com/january2002/feature2.htm I'm not too familiar with Crisis magazine but maybe somebody can clue me in regarding it's orthodoxy. Needless to say, this is a very interesting article regarding Oregon Catholic Press.
cmotherofpirl Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 They are right on the money and 100% orthodox.
Sojourner Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 We use an OCP hymnal at my parish. I can hardly stand to sing from it. Some of the songs literally make me nauseous.
Piccoli Fiori JMJ Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 Now this is wack:
What about the other option of splitting up the Masses according to style, so that those who like traditional music can have their own Mass and the people who compose for the OCP can have theirs? Prendergast rejects this. Whether the style is traditional, contemporary, folk, or even "rock," Prendergast says, "everyone in the parish has to be exposed to it." And what if a pastor just doesn't like rock and other contemporary styles? Prendergast says, "I would talk to the [chancery's] Office of Worship about him." I asked whether that means he would turn this poor priest in to the bishop. His response: "I would try to arrange for him to attend a workshop on liturgy."
Piccoli Fiori JMJ Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 We have I GIA (Isn't that what Gather is?) and Spirit & Song which appears to be OCP according to this article... yeah... It all makes me sick... I don't like much of the music at my Parish... Masses are always incrediably hard to get through because of this. At Visitation, my at-school parish, they have the OCP Missalette and Music Issue... It's okay... they have an organ and they sing some of the better songs anyways. I think that it is also part of the Diocese as well... Gotta love the Monasteries though... They make Mass so divine! Good ol' chant and Latin... Yay God! :
Sojourner Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 Yeah, I was just talking to someone about this a few days ago. I don't cantor at my parish because I can't stand the songs we sing. When I was Protestant, we sang some really beautiful traditional Catholic songs ... brilliant harmonies, beautiful lyrics. I've found very little of that actually being used in the Catholic church. I find that to be sad.
Fides_et_Ratio Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 Great article! My only disappointment was the GIA recommendation (it's probably WORSE than OCP!).
phatcatholic Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 the Adoremus hymnal is the best!!!!!!!! btw, Crisis mag is cool, but they are getting a reputation of being too political, w/o relating their political stance back to Catholic belief. they are somewhat on the verge of an identity "crisis"

1337 k4th0l1x0r Posted September 21, 2005 Posted September 21, 2005 This article nailed it. There are some decent and traditional songs in the OCP hymnal, it's just that most of what they put in the book is very sappy and fluffy and it seems they give no good advice on what to sing on what day. I remember the choir was singing some really upbeat song and were seemingly on the verge of clapping their hands at the end of Ash Wednesday Mass. My complaints about the music at my parish (and probably yours too): 1. No Variety. Just because a selection of songs is 'contemporary' doesn't mean we haven't heard it before. Most people haven't heard traditional hymns and that would be a real change for the better. 2. Use the psalm in the missalette! I always hate how they change the psalm on you and don't bother posting it on the board. That and trying to remember the responses bring back memories of learning the preamble to the Constitution. If you're going to change it make it short and sweet, and please let us know what you're changing it to. 3. Can we just have "lamb of God?" I'm tired of this whole, "Jesus bread of life, Jesus prince of peace, Jesus master of hip-hop." Let's use what we're supposed to use and stick to "Lamb of God." It worked for Mass for nearly two millenia. 4. We've built as much as we can and flown as high as we can go. I swear we've sung City of God so much that city has probably been built by now and Wal-Mart has had time to come in and put in a Super-Center. And we can't be raised up any higher on Eagles wings lest we run out of breathable atmosphere.
inDEED Posted September 21, 2005 Posted September 21, 2005 I LOVE OCP. But that shouldn't surprise you...
inDEED Posted September 21, 2005 Posted September 21, 2005 Huh... Read the article... It's a SHAME how many Catholic parishes are held as SLAVES to OCP - one of the leading publishers of Catholic music... Gimme a break... This article is a joke. OCP is a beautiful organization. And yes, dUSt - we've seen this article before...

Era Might Posted September 21, 2005 Posted September 21, 2005
Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger states clearly that popular music does not belong at Mass. Indeed, it's part of "a cult of the banal," and "rock" plainly stands "in opposition to Christian worship."
