cappie Posted September 20, 2005 Posted September 20, 2005 As seminarians, we prayed the Liturgy of the Hours in old-fashioned choir stalls which had fold-up seats and high arms. One morning, a visiting friar who was quite obese somehow managed to wedge himself into a stall. When the time came for everyone to rise at the Canticle of Zechariah, all stood except for this poor fat friar who appeared to be wildly beating his wings like some flightless bird trying to take off, as he struggled to extract his prodigious girth from the stall by frantically sliding his arms on the arm rest. Of course, no one came to his aid. As the friars sitting opposite of him began to notice his predicament, first stifled, then loud laughter spread through the chapel. Finally, the cantor noticed what was happening and could not continue intoning the antiphon. The organist fell forward onto the keyboard overcome by gales of laughter, completely unable to play the psalm tone. No one could regain his composure, so all of us, including the sumo-friar, left without having finished Morning Prayer. At Evening Prayer, the scene almost repeated itself when the visiting rotund friar entered the choir just before the hymn. He seemed to enjoy all the attention when someone ran to fetch a chair for him at which point everyone again began laughing uroariously. Somehow, we made it through Evening Prayer, although a fair number of friars felt compelled to leave prematurely, unable to contain the joy within them!
Fides_et_Ratio Posted September 20, 2005 Posted September 20, 2005 Though, I probably would've been scandalized at people leaving early (lol, I'm so picky!)

Brother Adam Posted September 20, 2005 Posted September 20, 2005 For some reason I don't find the thread funny.... I mean, if the person himself thought it was, cool...but I could see how that could upset someone

It was so wrong...but so funny... However, if I really wanted to upset you, Fides, I'd tell you about the time that Mike Kilker, a seminarian from Chicago, mixed a verse of "It's Closing Time" into the musical interlude he was playing after Mass...

cappie Posted September 20, 2005 Author Posted September 20, 2005 Nothing to do with prayer...just wishful thinking... A Jesuit, a Dominican, and a Capuchin were marooned on a desert island. They found a magic lamp, and naturally decided to rub it. Of course a genie appeared and offered them three wishes. In the spirit of charity they agreed each could have one wish. The Jesuit said he wanted to teach at the world's most famous university, and Poof! he was gone! The Dominican wished to preach in the world's largest church, and Poof! he was gone! The Capuchin said, "Gee, I already got my wish!"
