Thy Geekdom Come Posted September 20, 2005 Posted September 20, 2005 Okay, the point of this game is to guess the food by the ingredients. No generics allowed, like: ENRICHED FLOUR [WHEAT FLOUR, NIACIN, REDUCED IRON, THIAMINE MONONITRATE (VITAMIN B1), RIBOFLAVIN (VITAMIN B2), FOLIC ACID], VEGETABLE SHORTENING (PARTIALLY HYDROGENATED SOYBEAN AND/OR COTTONSEED OILS), SALT, CONTAINS TWO PERCENT OR LESS OF LEAVENING (SODIUM BICARNBONATE, SODIUM ACID PYROPHOSPHATE, MONOCALCIUM PHOSPHATE), SUGAR, MALT SYRUP, CORN SYRUP, NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL DAIRY FLAVOR. (Oyster Crackers) But something that gives away characteristics, like: SORBITOL; MALTITOL; MALTODEXTRIN; NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR; GUM ACACIA; MAGNESIUM STEARATE; ASPARTAME; CITRIC ACID; SOY LECHITHIN; AND ARTIFICIAL COLOR (BLUE 1). (Mints) Let's see how long it takes for this to fall miserably to the bottom of the threads.
Fides_et_Ratio Posted September 20, 2005 Posted September 20, 2005 I don't see much difference between the two ways of listing ingredients... but then again, I don't often read ingredients....

It's a give-away to those who read ingredients. Sorbitol is commonly used in mints (and makes you lose your appetite, but isn't allowed to be sold as a diet drug...only in mints...).
Dreamweaver Posted September 21, 2005 Posted September 21, 2005 Ooo, I actually think this would actually be fun! I work with a girl who's majoring in food safety/science stuff, so she's obsessed with reading food ingredients. This one may be kind of tricky. Its a staple for many asian dishes, such as stir fry. WATER, SUGAR, SALT, FOOD STARCH-MODIFIED, OYSTER EXTRACTIVES, HYDROLYZED SOY PROTEIN, MONOSODIUM GLUTAMATE AS A FLAFOR ENHANCER, CARMEL COLOR, SODIUM BENZOATE ADDED AS A PRESERVATIVE. Good luck!

Thy Geekdom Come Posted September 21, 2005 Author Posted September 21, 2005 As a side note, I found a website that will do an item search by ingredient.

homeschoolmom Posted September 21, 2005 Posted September 21, 2005 This reminds me of the game Al had where we had to find kosher food in our cupboards...
