morostheos Posted September 21, 2005 Posted September 21, 2005 : I'm just really excited about my new job! Starting this Friday I will be the Catholic Campus Minister at Radford University in Virginia, pray for me and for my souls!!!! Also, anyone have any good tips?
philothea Posted September 21, 2005 Posted September 21, 2005 Woohoo! Lucky kids. Prayers for much success. (No tips here either, sorry.)
Thy Geekdom Come Posted September 21, 2005 Posted September 21, 2005 I don't know about tips, but college ministry is one of the things I'm interested in. My only problem is that I would think most college campuses had few enough students that the priests could handle it. I didn't figure there were many openings for members of the laity in such fields...
dspen2005 Posted September 21, 2005 Posted September 21, 2005 here's a tip.... just be faithful to the magisterium of the Church.
Andrea348 Posted September 21, 2005 Posted September 21, 2005 i absolutely adored my campus ministers. i think you'll have a blast. just be yourself. my favorite times with the campus ministers was when they let their guard down and their true personalities came out. you got to see the real side of them and it made you trust them more when you had a problem and you needed to go talk to them.

We have fewer priests than we do parishes. Also, I guess you could kinda think of it as a youth minister, except for college age students. Oh, the the faithful to the Magisterium thing - DEFINITELY!!! : There's no other way to bring about true conversion of souls!
cmotherofpirl Posted September 21, 2005 Posted September 21, 2005 Congratulations and God bless you.!

Father Patrick Golden was pretty cool. He's at St. Jude's. Young guy. He was my priest back home in Smithfield for a while. My mom called him Father What-a-waste . He's very engaging in his homilies. When my girlfriend went to Radford freshman year, we went to St. Jude's. I, unfortunately, was not a good Catholic, and she was Baptist...it was a weird time. The only other tip I have for you is, do NOT be like the campus minister at ODU. She is not a saint, contrary to popular opinion. the director of campus ministry for the diocese is her friend. Radford's such nice country.
morostheos Posted September 22, 2005 Author Posted September 22, 2005 You know Fr. Patrick?? He seems really cool! I've met with him a couple of times already. St. Jude's is such a cute little country parish. Outside of the church, each family has their own garden plot they take care of.
ThyHolyLove Posted September 22, 2005 Posted September 22, 2005 One piece of advice: do lots of nun-runs and seminary sprints!! vocations rock and VA has a lot of solid religious orders!

Thy Geekdom Come Posted September 22, 2005 Posted September 22, 2005 By the way...as for tips...see if you can get any deals with local businesses to help draw people in. My old pastor got a deal with Valentino's (really good Nebraskan pizza chain) for cheap pizzas for parties after the Sunday evening Masses. It will draw people after Mass into the community and hopefully they will be drawn into parish events, retreats, etc. Additionally...ask for lots of time for adoration...college students really will go. We supported 16 hours/week of adoration at my old Newman Center.

At least, from my experience and from certain things I have seen..... like I said, just be a REAL Catholic and willingly and humbly submit to the teaching and judgement of Holy Mother CHurch.

It is more beneficial here though because the dining halls are closed on sunday evenings. This way, students can get a cheap meal (all you can eat buffet) for $5. It started off slow because of lack of advertising. If you do take this advise, advertise a lot as to draw in more people. What I would suggest is plan some events with them at least once a week. For example, what I found awesome with the FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students) ministry, we play ultimate frisbee every once in a while, we had a chocolate themed party one night. Things like that get college students involved. I really does help.
morostheos Posted September 22, 2005 Author Posted September 22, 2005 Thanks for the tips and the congrats everyone! I will be sure to try and use all of your recommendations!!
