Aloysius Posted September 26, 2005 Posted September 26, 2005 I have determined that the best study method I could have for sociology is absolutely defacing the sociology book. It is SOOOO much fun and it really helps me learn better because I write in comments about the absurdity of this or that liberal position mentioned in there, and thus I remember that that is the liberal position I have to answer from when taking a test! Especially fun is defacing pictures of Karl Marx... and I sharpy up that bad boy with sooooo many comments. It rules. Even if I'm just writing over whole paragraphs as "pointless" and "how much money did I pay to read this garbage?" or correcting their english errors or crtiqueing their horrible literary skill in writing about stuff, it all helps me remember and such. It makes studying fun : Anyway, absolutely ripping your textbook to shreds and sharpying it and x-ing out stuff and making snide comments in it (like changing everything that says "sociology" to "socialismology" and labeling the front cover with a big "DANGER: MARXIST PROPOGANDA") is the absolute funnest way to learn! I love college.
Guest T-Bone Posted September 26, 2005 Posted September 26, 2005 I've always enjoyed highlighting the most pointless passages, then selling the books back to the bookstore. Makes life hard for the lazy people who buy used books because they come pre-highlighted with notes in the margins...
Noel's angel Posted September 26, 2005 Posted September 26, 2005 If you don't have respect for your own property, how can you respect others, and indeed how can you expect others to respect your property?
Aloysius Posted September 26, 2005 Author Posted September 26, 2005 this is something I own because I'm forced to take the class if I want to get a degree... and I think I'm improving it by taking away all the pessimistic attitudes about the power of the human person to overcome any situation! besides, I don't classify it as property. that would be an insult to true property... that would insult my precious stacks of books by people from Aristotle to Aquinas to Shakespeare to G.K. Chesterton and such! That would insult this cool little black box that lets me see phatmass and the crappy plastic kia rio car that gets me to mass on sundays... that would devalue my cool piano-keyboard with real feeling keys... that would devalue the refrigerator that keeps my beverages cold! no, this book doesn't deserve to be called my property. I value myself too much to assosiate myself with it. (the book is called "Sociology: A Global Perspective" or as I like to call it "Socialismology: A Modernized Westernized Perspective of the Globe"
Noel's angel Posted September 26, 2005 Posted September 26, 2005 regardless of what you think of it you should still respect it and the work that has gone into it.
Aloysius Posted September 26, 2005 Author Posted September 26, 2005 I don't see why... it's from a publishing company that comes out with 'new editions' every couple years slapping on a couple insignificant changes just so people can't use the last year's book in their class so the company can get more money... and to top it all off the entire slant of the book is to indoctrinate the youth with a disdain of money-making incentives and operations anyway, it seriously helps me learn better, keeps me sane while I'm reading through poorly written chapters that don't even so much as try to hide their socialist and communist leanings, and makes it fun for me.

Nicole8223 Posted September 26, 2005 Posted September 26, 2005 thats funny....i used to make comments in a book for a similar class. when we did the chapter on the sociology of sex, i wrote SO many comments in the margins to knock pretty much everything the book said. some books are so ridiculous!
franciscanheart Posted September 26, 2005 Posted September 26, 2005
as long as you own, why not...?
because you can sell it back other than that i would totally mark up the book. i do that to any notes i get. stories too. everything i am going to end up trashing later i write all over. so much fun!
Nicole8223 Posted September 26, 2005 Posted September 26, 2005 But in this case, he can sell it back and the next person to buy it will be able to see his notes about how stupid some of the statements in the book are Colleges accept used books even if they are highlighted and marked up. Students actually prefer these books cause they think it saves them time in studying.
franciscanheart Posted September 26, 2005 Posted September 26, 2005 hmmm.... cool : *starts marking up all of her books*
Aloysius Posted September 26, 2005 Author Posted September 26, 2005 for example, it used a woman that stopped shaving her armpits as an example of the backlash of going against societatal norms. in jest I wrote "HIPPY FREAK!" But now, if the teacher asked me for an example from the book of going against societatal norms, I'll remember the hippy freak and it'll all come back I also wrote "and so symbolizes the death of our roman civilized world and the dominion of the barbarians" because.. well.. we shave because it's a held onto symbolism from the Roman world who viewed it as symbolic of being civilized, and it makes sense because it's like taming the fallen nature and distinguishing ourselves from animals... anyway, I especially like when I see them thinking they have a new idea "and this has only been thought of in the last couple decades" or "last couple centuries" and I can think of some historical group that came up with the idea first... and I'll write stuff like 'plagiarism of such and such historic group? (claimin their ideas as their own in the court system of a democracy of the dead they could be prosecuted!)" lol
jezic Posted September 26, 2005 Posted September 26, 2005 the only thing is that sometimes they check for the type of highlighting. At least they do here. If it looks like you just wrote stuff all over, they won't take it back. That doesn't help you much if they say that.
Aloysius Posted September 26, 2005 Author Posted September 26, 2005 I'd rather pass the course, I'm was not even concerned with selling it back (that was other people), so don't worry about it.
Theoketos Posted September 26, 2005 Posted September 26, 2005 (edited) I really would not be expecting to get money back for that book Al. But if it helps you study, I say destroy the book. It is a properly ordered action. The books has no real other purpose. Sociology is blind (thanks in a large part to Margeret Sanger) Edited September 26, 2005 by Theoketos

Proud2BCatholic139 Posted September 26, 2005 Posted September 26, 2005 My study method is very unique. I memorize material by song or pictures the best. So, if it is a test on matching, I make a song out of it. (I.E. English, Science, or French) Pictures, I like. I can't just read something because I'll forget it. That's where the pictures come in. I do ok on tests...I need to be better at those.
Noel's angel Posted September 26, 2005 Posted September 26, 2005 What if someone didn't like a Catholic theology book, or, Heaven forbid, the Bible and started defacing that? Its a lack of respect-maybe not where you live, but over here we respect books, regardless of whether we like them or not.
