Thumper Posted October 2, 2005 Posted October 2, 2005
While that blessing thing is okay, it's always made me REALLY uncomfortable, being we (at least most places where I have gone) raise the right hand. I've always felt awkward doing that...and then last year, we had a group of German students visiting our school during a school Mass where we did a blessing. That made things very, very awkward. A teacher had explained to them what we were doing and why, but it still seemed wrong and very uncomfortable.
I hadn't thought about the connection back to the Nazis, but I guess I've always understood the arms to be extended in blessing, and not in salute. I don't remember ever being told to raise my right arm in particular, and I know in some parishes they raise both arms.
Jaime Posted October 2, 2005 Posted October 2, 2005 (edited) I was at a Catholic wedding reception and they did something very weird. They made all of us get in a circle then we had to put our right hand in. Then we had to put our right hand out. After that we put it in again and shook it. Very strange indeed Edited October 2, 2005 by jaime

Thumper Posted October 2, 2005 Posted October 2, 2005 Darn, I'm broke. Guess I'm just going to have to join hot stuff for liturgical dance.
Sojourner Posted October 2, 2005 Posted October 2, 2005 I'm broke too, hence having to charge. Otherwise I'd be happy to give you lessons for free. Have fun liturgically dancing.
Theologian in Training Posted October 2, 2005 Posted October 2, 2005 It was wrong, but I have seen it done. Just remember though, the only person that can actually give a homily is an ordained priest or deacon, she was not really giving a homily, but a talk on the readings. I know it sounds a bit technical, but it makes me feel better God Bless

toledo_jesus Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 We don't need to stick our arms out. It's not something everyone is comfortable doing. I liken it to hand holding during the Our Father. Really, I think only priests should do it. sounds like a bad sunday morning. we had a visiting priest today. He did the "extend your arms" thing for the children.
photosynthesis Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 hahahahaha!!!!! eww, i would never do anything like that at my wedding, and NO UNITY CANDLES!!! I don't like the idea of dismissing children during the Liturgy of the Word. It's very patronizing. Children are not stupid idiots and they ARE capable of understanding what the Bible says. In fact, sometimes it's esier to understand because there's a certain type of faith children have that adults lack. Parishes do this a lot.. they assume that the youth aren't smart/aware/mature enough to fully embrace the Truth. but they are!!! Kids also shouldn't be taken away from their families during Mass. I think families should experience the Liturgy of the Word together so that they can reflect on it together outside Mass. While it can benefit children to have the Truth preached to them in a "language" they can understand, this should be done during catechism and not in place of the real liturgy of the word. I also don't like the idea of dismissing RCIA candidates during the consecration, like they do at my grandma's parish.
DemonSlayer Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 At this Mass I went to the other day, we had to hold hands around the altar with the priest.

Totus Tuus Posted October 4, 2005 Posted October 4, 2005 We had a Jesuit and a fake nun do the same thing at my *old* parish (it became my old parish when they came). It was supposed to be some kind of parish renewal, but they basicaly destroyed any remnant of Catholicism, besides the Eucharist, that had existed in the Church. It was awful.
toledo_jesus Posted October 4, 2005 Posted October 4, 2005 man. Is it a sin to use the word uh...b.s.? not the initials, the word. cause it just rings so true for this situation... one time when a certain priest omitted the Creed on purpose for the umpteenth time I stood up, said this is B.S. and left Mass. I was going through a rough patch .
